Well...we do have a thread that asks if people read manga for free--but that includes borrowing copies from the library also, and it's possible to read manga online and not be reading for free. If you want to see what people have written there, it's here:

I don't like reading manga on websites--just because it feels awkward. It's been true when I've tried to read my manga on the Viz website, and when I had a JManga account, but I don't like having physical books either. I do buy all the manga I read, but I buy digital and read it on my iPad mini or Kindle Fire ( I'm really hoping the CR Manga apps will be as good as what I'm used to using to read manga and comics on my devices.)

(Pssst. Naming *those* sites is against CR's rules, so I've, uh, fixed it for you.)

I think some of those missing volumes are forthcoming, but I did see in the news article that there might be some restrictions that mean some won't be available everywhere. I guess we just have to wait and see.

I personally enjoy sitting down with a book in my hands. I've never quite enjoyed reading online. Though I will say that I read stuff that has not been licensed in Europe online.

I buy the books I read, with the occasional visit to the library. I know it's an expensive hobby, thinking mainly of manga, but I think it's worth every crown. It's just that feeling when you walk past your bookshelf and remember all the wonderful stories you've read. Flip trough the pages and read it again. The physical book can, in my opinion, never be replaced by the digital book.

I buy physical copies for manga. Can't stand using the computer to read manga on, though I may eventually try to read manga on a tablet if I ever get one. That might be a way for me to enjoy having it in my hand to read, but it being digital so I would get more options.

I always find the comment "I would buy manga but they don't sell them in stores near where I live, so I'll read them online for free instead" to be an extremely pathetic excuse.

No matter where you live in the world, you can legally buy manga from the exact same place you are illegally reading manga for free — on the Internet.

The Crunchyroll Store. Amazon. eBay. They all sell manga. And the list goes on and on.

For me, I buy physical copies of my favorite series, and read manga online because sometimes A.) The Japanese side is ahead of the English release, and/or B.) is not licensed by anyone in North America.

I honestly used to buy physical copies, but now that I have boxes filling half my closet of them I tend to read online (stops my parents from wanting to give them all away as the house undergoes renovations as well). The libraries have practically no selection (sadly) so that pretty much left me at online reading. I still buy physical copies, but I limit myself to the ones where I reread them online over and over again.

I read a lot online, borrow a lot from my library, and only buy the ones I simply MUST have.

I just showed your post to a couple of the manga creators in our office here in Tokyo. They asked me to thank you for respecting and supporting the hard work of artists!
