Well sometimes it can be kind of obvious which animes here are successful and which ones are flops. Usually all we have to do here is look at the episode reviews and the series reviews; Granted this only gives us a look at how it is doing overseas, not in japan.

So I was wondering, how do you gauge the popularity of anime during a season?

I use Osu! personally, as the hits usually have a spamton of beatmaps, and the good ones get their ops/eds before midseason in the anime.

Currently ranked beatmaps for Outbreak Company and Beyond the Boundary have appeared (and both are smashing personally)

So basically TL;DR What quirky things do you use to figure if an anime is popular? (other than some of the obvious choices)

If I look it up on wikipedia and there's a lot of detail (or a lot of topics in the Talk page.)

Sometimes, if I search up a general word from the show's title or a common character name and the top suggestions are for the show, that does the job too..

I used to see if there was a lot of Japanese fan art. But, now it's more about fan service than anything..

Go on Tumblr, see how many people make unfunny crappy gifs with captions or characters from the show in question, Attack on Titan I'm looking at you. But to be brutally honest I don't really care whether or not a show is popular, If I like the look, sound and story of it I'll watch it.

The number of haters hating upon a show. Truely bad shows don't have hates, just dislikes.

But in wholesome, I also judge the number of viewers, the studio who created it, it's overall quality, and the level of talk and hype.

People hate on some things, but will only tell you if you're already telling someone else how much you like it. The more people who talk about it, the more chances for them to tell you the gripes!

Actually I think it's one of the best animes to come out last season, if not one of the best to come out in the last five years, what I don't like is the obsessive fandom heralding it like it's some kind of sacred holy gift from god praising it for qualities it doesn't posses, I dunno why I'm so surprised though, Code Geass had this much undeserved praise (also one of my favorites) when it came out too and now, it's hardly ever talked about, Same thing should happen to AoT but still doesn't change how annoying majority of the fans are.

Personally IMO the amount of discussion an anime generates is a good indication of popularity. There's also the amoount of merchandise sold and ahem... the amount of hentai artworks it generates...

So the show is great but the fandom is full of idiots? Don't worry because you're not the only person in the fandom that feels that way. Every fandom has it's crazies and sane fans.

I'm also a Code Geass fan.

Personally, I don't even worry about a show's popularity. It's not a metric I even look at.

That said, if I was a retailer or distributor, a couple of "new-ish" Internet related gauges are available that I would consider along with Pre-sales/Pre-orders, etc.:

- Social (FB, Twitter, Google+, etc..)
- Search (Google metrics on amount of searching done on the show)

For example: Google Trends offer a good view of search popularity.

That's just comparing searches for "Attack On Titan" and "Sword Art Online". Look what happens when I add "Naruto" (gold line) and "One Piece" (green line) into the graph:

Great way to show the sustained popularity of Naruto over the years.

Hmm... I just watch shows I find that look or sound interesting (by either the title, comments if the show has any, or if I see something on like Facebook I will look up the Wiki page for it to get an idea of the show)

Don't really do anything complicated or what I would think is ordinary for anyone looking at a show.

What space the show is listed on Crunchyroll A.K.A Naruto Shippuden is the first anime that appears once you click on "Shows" so it is the most popular on Crunchyroll. Since CR is a very popular site, I figured that is a good way to gauge a shows popularity.

go to 2chan

then

go to 4chan

/thread

or if you only lurk cr

go to the anime forums (since users go to the other forum sections, right? lol) and watch people write endless essays about why sailor uniforms is representative of something deep, significant, insightful-nature. (seriously it is just a show)

The forums. Whether good or bad more popular series generate more conversation so that's the best way for me i guess.
