This was brought up in another thread and it got me thinking. Just what are waifu pillows and why do people like them so much? To me they are just a step up from sex dolls you know the blow up kind....any way what are your thoughts on this creepy little courner of otaku fandom?

They're a bit odd to me, but as an option on the poll said, "to each their own". They kinda make me worry a bit about the blurring line between fiction and reality, though.

Waifu pillow? I've got a dakimakura, but it's just a pillow. I kind of got it just because I'm kind of lacking in noticeable otaku gear. Nobody can really tell I'm an otaku just from looking at me, after all.

Plus, it's of Motoko from Ghost in the Shell so.....well worth the money.

Actually, they really do creep me out. After a while you going to realize that you making out with a pillow and going to ask what have I been doing with my life.

Various names have attached themselves to them, but I've heard them mostly called Dakimakuras:

- Dakimakura
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakimakura

A dakimakura (抱き枕?) (from daki (抱き?) "to embrace or cling" and makura (枕?) "pillow"), also called Dutch wife, is a type of large pillow from Japan. The word is often translated in English simply as "hug pillow". In Japan, dakimakura are similar to Western orthopedic body pillows, and are commonly used by Japanese youth as "security objects".

In the West, "dakimakura" is associated with a love pillow. Love pillows are a subset of dakimakura and a type of inflatable sex toy. They usually have life-size pictures of anime characters or pornographic film actors, often in suggestive poses.

During the 1990s, dakimakura began to intertwine with otaku culture, leading to the production of pillow covers featuring printed images of bishōjo and bishonen from various anime or Bishōjo game. Many of these early otaku dakimakura covers were released through Cospa, a character goods and apparel store which continues to release official dakimakura covers to this day.

Although sometimes called a Dutch wife, the original definition of this phrase is closer to the chikufujin.

I have one. It just stays there doing nothing like a pillow should.
Some people get extreme with those dakimakura pillows but there is worst things you can do.

Example:
Trying to marry the pillow.
Taking everywhere with you in public.
Having sex with it(if that is even possible).
Instead of a pillow, getting bed sheets of the character.
Etc

Some people have severe issues in this world. What can you do?
