Hey, was hoping somebody can explain something to me. I'm the type who refuses to read manga and only watches anime. Sometimes in comments I'll post about information we've already seen in previous episodes or remark about what I think might happen based on what has occurred to that point. Later on when I go to check on my comments to see if anybody has replied, I'll notice my comment/question was been marked as a spoiler. The sad part is I didn't post as a spoiler and things are only educated guesses, nothing more. Any idea why the heck my comments are always being marked as spoilers even though I didn't check for it to be marked as such? Doesn't matter if I'm guessing wrong or right, nobody should be marking a question or comment as a spoiler if it isn't aimed as one.

Hi, I've moved this from General Discussion to Site Support / Minor Questions.

Chances are, it was reported as a spoiler, and a mod (who may or may not be familiar with the show in question) had to make a judgment call. In a short comment it's not always easy for other users reading the comment, or for the mods reviewing a report, to tell if you were just making a speculative remark based on what had happened thus far, or are revealing/suggesting events you know about from the the manga or watching later episodes.

By marking it as a spoiler we are "playing it safe."--folks can still see the comment if the click on it, but it's not right in their face.

Also, sometimes, the possible conclusions that seem obvious to one person, aren't so obvious to another. If they read your guesses before they've had a chance to work that out for themselves, they might consider it a spoiler.

Also, although it may seem common sense for people to actually watch the episode before reading comments for them, we sometimes hear from people that a comment about the episode ruined the episode for them (when the comments are right there when you go to the episode page, it's sometimes hard not to take a peek--especially when the comments are at the top). Therefore we also consider mention of events in that episode to be spoilers.

Generally if the spoiler is very obviously about important events beyond the episode the comment is for, it will actually be deleted.

My quote was a response as such...

"Something tells me she's from a different generation. Remember how Cain referred to him as third generation before? So we were left wondering who/what 2nd was. Obviously Marie is one of the earlier generations."

All I did was simply remind people that 4-10 episodes prior we heard there were more than one generation. After that reminder I made a conclusion that the one character must be from an earlier generation based off of what we saw in that episode. Even if you hadn't seen the episode, a person would have no idea why I'm saying that or what's going on. Definitely isn't enough in my book for a spoiler.

Another example of one that had been flagged as a spoiler in the past was Attack on Titan. When I saw the female Titan's face it looked familiar. I went back and saw in a previous episode somebody whose face looked similar. I posted on the similarities, where they can see for themselves, and said it would be interesting to see if it was her or not. Again, nothing known but was giving thought for people based on information we had all already seen.

What's happened by you guys labeling my guessing, comments, and reactions as spoilers is that you have ruined some things for me. Things I was unsure of and trying to open discussion and debate on was concluded when you chose to verify the fact by marking it as a spoiler. Guess you could say that's one of the reasons I'm highly upset by people not paying attention to what they mark.

It is really simple actually.

1: Someone reported your comment because they felt it was a spoiler. That would be another user, not a moderator. Aside from extremely popular shows that users were actively trying to spoil like Attack on Titan we mods don't go looking through the comments for things to mark.

2: Your comment being marked as a spoiler is not a bad thing. There is nothing in the site rules about posting a spoiler comment unless you are doing it intentionally unmarked as a means of irritating other users. Example being most of the Attack on Titan spoilers. So you aren't in trouble, you haven't been marked by the mods, and your comments are perfectly fine.

So just remember, everyone has their own idea of what is a spoiler to them. Some users do not want to think about what might happen, they just want to watch their show and find out by viewing. To them just about anything could be a spoiler, and if it is questionable we mods are going to ere on the side of caution and apply the spoiler mark. Why? Because marking it as spoiler does not remove your comment, or really impede anyone from reading it. It just let's those users who are really concerned about knowing as little as possible about the show know that there could be spoiler info in the comment.

I've actually the same problem but mine are automatically flagged a spoilers no matter what I post. Then I see blatant spoilers that are not flagged as spoilers. I've contacted CR twice about it without a response. It's super annoying. It makes me not want to participate in discussion and I'm definitely not going to pay for a defective website.

It wouldn't hurt to watch the episodes then look at the comments.

I do watch the episode but the point of spoiler flags is so it's flagged to let you know it's a spoiler. It doesn't unflag comments just because you finish the episode. My comment flagged as a spoiler while I'm writing it and as soon as a post it regardless of the content but other comments that have episode or even future episode detail goes unflagged which I find strange. I don't get why some are auto flagged and others are not.

There is not a mechanism for autoflagging comments as spoilers. Mods have to manually go through and mark them, and we have not been doing that with your comments. Are you sure you aren't mistaking the option to mark your own comment as a spoiler, for a spoiler "flag"?

If you see your comment and a link that says "spoiler" at the same time when you first go into comments, then it has not been marked as a spoiler. If you go into comments and see only the words "Show Spoiler Comment" and not your comment (until you click on the words "Show Spoiler Comment") then it has been marked as a spoiler.

Since you only have the option of marking your own comments as spoilers, then that's why you don't see the spoiler option on other people's comments.

ETA: for example, here's a screenshot from an episode you recently commented on (sorted with recent first). Your comment on the top looks like this for everyone else--you would additionally see the word "spoiler" down in the lower right when you are logged in, but no one else does.

The last message in the screenshot (by user Nightbeat456) is one that actually has been marked as a spoiler. You see only the words "Show spoiler comment" and not the actual comment unless you click on it.)

I sent the one above to support on 8/19 I didn't flag it myself and since the skip beat one is not flagged maybe it's fixed but I've contacted support a couple times regarding this. As soon as I post it it will show as flagged sometimes. If I can recreate it again I'll record it of that helps. Hopefully it doesn't happen. During the Times prior I was not a member .

That comment you show in the screenshot is not flagged and it doesn't appear to have been at the time you took the screenshot. The part that says "spoiler" is just what you would click on if you wanted to mark it as a spoiler. The reason you see it on only your comment is because only you (and mods) can mark your comment as a spoiler. Other users don't see that word "spoiler" on your comment.

If it were already flagged as a spoiler you would see the words "Show Spoiler Comment" and you wouldn't see the comment until you clicked on "Show Spoiler Comment."

I guess I must have flagged my own comments prior some how when I have signed out to see on other videos. Thanks for clarifying! You should work for support because I've asked twice with no word back.
