MADLAX was good. I still have to finish Cazador de la Bruja... didn't find it quite as good as MADLAX or Noir, though.

Fair enough but it used a lot of the same themes. reminded both a bit of Noir and Madlax....oh and it got licensed by ADV or one of its successors and used a lot of the same english voice talent.

The 'problem' with anime straight from scratch is that the manga has a huge leg up. It's already got an audience. and it's already been storyboarded.

I think the original '98 evangelion was a strict idea to anime though. So I believe was Noir. of course these are all so five minutes ago to you young whipper snappers. You'd be shocked that I consider such shows along with BGC 2040 and Cowboy Bebop to be new.

Evangelion was indeed anime original, and it is wonderful.

truly. Despite its flaws and the tendency for us fan to read far too much DEPTH into the babblings of a guy self admitted into an asylum and whacked out on anti-depressants... It's still the break through anime for me. The one that changed me from sometime watcher to a Western-TV-is-Crap-and-I-must-buy-all-things-Ayanami-fan. I've since recovered my sanity but regard the show with nostalgic fondness. I wonder if I'm still able to describe the onscreen action with my back to the tv while doing handicrafts and listening with half an ear to the sound track.

So far the only Manga I have read have been on series I have actually watched in Anime, though I think soon I may start choosing Manga I have not seen an Anime for if the store I go to has any (which there is I just have not looked at them yet).

That being said I am currently reading and watching Kimi ni Todoke (also have read/watched some of Fairy Tail, Oreimo, and Rosario + Vampire) and I must say while I like seeing things animated and moving, I absolutely love being able to read it more. SO far I have not seen TOO much of a difference between the two. But I have been told, plenty of time at that, in a lot of series I have watched in Anime that the Manga is so much better. Given this is usually down to personal opinion, but I can easily see where a Manga could, and probably has, a better or different scene or ending than what is shown in an Anime especially if the Anime catches up to the written material and has to make its own ending.

Battle Angel Alita (Gunm)

The manga is still ongoing. The OVA didn't even escape the first book...and engaged in major canon violations to boot.

On the other hand... the ova got me to READ the manga.

Well, the OVA was a condensed version of the first two volumes. It tried and failed, but at least it tried. I started reading the manga first, and from what I saw it was nice seeing how they adapted with what little they were given. But yes, I'd choose the manga over the ova. It was annoying, though, finding cheap copies of the first series. Plus, I like consistency, so when Viz no longer held the rights, I had no way of getting the "sequel", Last Order, expect from Kodansha's omnibus editions, at a fair price. Though, I shouldn't be complaining all that much, because having it in that format is nice. Hopefully, they get the original nine volumes and reprint them in omnibus format. I'd say without a doubt Battle Angel Alita (or Gunnm, whichever) is one of my favorite series ever. I also don't think it needs a remake adaptation, it's fine in manga format.

Another one is, of course, Gantz, though I did like what they did at the end. Having the worst enemy be humans themselves. Then there's Gunslinger girl, love the manga, and the anime was alright. I like it when there are noticible differences between the original source and the adaptation, like the original Fullmetal Alchemist, and the other three I just mentioned. As for a more recent example, you can include Attack on Titan as well, Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, or Fate/Zero. Whichever.

I usually only read a manga if I really liked the anime and it turned out that the story wasn't finished at all (Ichigo 100% and Sasameki Koto come to mind) for that very reason, the source material is always better but I don't always know right away what the source material is (I loved the anime Sword Art Online but the manga is horrific, just didn't know it wasn't the source). I learned from movies that are based on books that reading the story before seeing it can tarnish your opinion of the visual work.

I need to go back and watch that, started it but had to stop for some reason, loved Noir so much I bought the Madlax series before watching it, something I almost never do.

Kingdom.
The first season of the anime spit on the manga with its 3D animation and to add insult to injury the censorship is lame. Instead of blood they put a shiny white liquid. Seriously?

Phantom Requiem for the Phantom is really good, if you haven't seen that already (same ones who made all the other three). Here's the Funi trailer:
