I was guiding Buttercup through the Fire Swamp one day, when it attacked and nearly bit my arm off. Before that, I didn't think it existed.

Digimon was my first taste of anime. Back in 1999 when I was nine. Then I later discovered DBZ via Toonami, Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters, and Medabots. After that it is all history.

Well when I was little I watched Pokemon, but didn't really know what it was. As I grew older I joined a drawing site and kept up coming across anime drawings and I guess one day I saw some fanart of Rurouni Kenshin and decided to check it out.

Grew up on Robotech and then left it behind until The Slayers when I just rediscovered it.

A combination of things. I grew up on it in the sense I watched DBZ, Sailor Moon, and the like but initially didn't know it was anything different than the usual cartoons.
I learned about it as differentiated form of media, from gaming, specifically from Final Fantasy VII fansites when I finally got good internet access instead of dial-up.
Since many of them were run by anime fans, they would have recommendations and the like.
I jumped into anime on the deep end with Evangelion too. Eva was the first anime I saw when I was 11 after renting a few DBZ videos from Blockbuster since it was highly recommended so often. All on VHS with a mish-mash of sub and dub, since the rental boxes were so poorly labeled all the time.

I actually grew up of course with the typical cable anime like DBZ and Sailor Moon but back in'09 I'd watch Naruto every night on tv. I got to the filler arc after the Sasuke Retrieval Arc and decided to catch up faster on the internet and BOOM I was sucked into all types of crazy anime.Haha

I grew up with Yugioh and Yugioh GX, without realising it was an anime, then when I was 11 or so my friend wouldn't shut up about Naruto, so I watched it throughout my summer holidays and then I was hooked. I then started trying out simular things and then before I knew it I was a god damn otaku.

My neighbors made my siblings catch the pokemon game flu, so my parents got us the anime VHSs. Then my neighbor had the Sailor Moon R Movie. I kept asking my parents for more "realistic looking cartoons", completely unaware that it was "anime."

Then Yugioh happened, followed by Toonami. Then in middle school Naruto and Bleach happened. When I tried escaping the filler arcs, I found the original FMA anime and decided to go all out otaku. Never looked back.

I had watched it on TV like Astro Boy and Speed Racer not knowing it was anime as a kid but then stumbled upon our anime store to really delve into shows like Ninja Scroll, Grave of the Fireflies, Ranma 1/2 and such on old VHS.
