Just received this message back from CR support after I asked a question about the Crunchyroll App on my Boxee malfunctioning. Considering I purchased my Boxee specifically to watch crunchyroll on my TV, my displeasure knows no bounds.

I've moved this to Feedback, since it's more of a complaint than a general discussion topic.

Boxee probably won't do diddly. After their purchase by Samsung, they even dropped support for the Cloud DVR service on their recent product, the Boxee TV:

^^^ Seriously!

What's a good alternative to Boxee? I got a Boxee because it plays basically every media format I could ever want, but I'm tired of dealing with the second dumbest hardware and software issues I've ever dealt with.

Sucks. Just leave the app up for us to use. Doesn't hurt anyone except the folks who used to use it to watch CR content.

CR via web isn't an option since the site is basically broken in the boxee browser.

CR, just because the device is obsolete didn't mean you had to actually remove the app from our devices! Now my girlfriend and I are without an acceptable way to watch anime on my paid account! I don't care if it never gets an update, just please put it back!

The Boxee Box web browser is not an acceptable alternative. It might technically play the videos when you can manage to get to them, but just navigating the site (or any other site) is a nightmare.

[EDIT]
So... CR just sent me the same canned form letter that ray73_babe got. Not cool at all. As if it's news to us that Boxee discontinued the device ages ago. As if the Crunchyroll staff was wasting any time or resources updating the app any time in the last year anyway. As if now there's suddenly a good reason to take the app away from anyone that was still using it instead of leaving it alone until it stops working. As if shelling out a minimum of $100 for an equivalent or better device is a mere inconvenience.

What's the deal with that anyway? Are they gonna start blocking users on old web browsers next? Is this what happens to the PS3 users in a year or two once Sony decides the PS4 is going strong enough for them to axe the PS3? Why bother upgrading? You know those "other" sources of anime that Crunchy is supposed to be a replacement for? Yeah, they'll still work just fine with the hardware I already own. What happened to being the better alternative? C'mon guys!

What really makes me mad isn't the wasted money I invested in both products. It's the wasted faith I invested in the companies behind them.

So, basically you don't know what the issue is, so you assume there's no issue.

Yes, if you focus on the top end of the market, looking for over-priced devices for some features of interest to a smaller group of people, there's a risk to that. The $50-$60 part of the market is a much bigger market ~ from hundreds of times bigger to many thousands of times bigger ~ and that market size means much less risk of this kind of thing happening.

I suspect CR doesn't work with Flash below a specific version, so if Adobe were to stop updating Flash for some older web browser (i.e., IE6), then effectively CR would be dropping support for older web browsers. YouTube started blocking older versions of IE long ago, and won't support older versions of other browsers, so CR certainly wouldn't be setting a precedent if they did that.

The PS3 support isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Even if Sony stopped selling the PS3 on the day the PS4 was introduced (which isn't going to happen), there are enough PS3 units deployed to make it one of the top settop streaming platforms (substantially more than the Apple TV and Roku combined). In contrast, the couple of hundred thousand Boxee Box units sold were barely a blip on the radar.

I am simply taking Crunchyroll at their word as to what the issue is. Unfortunately, the reason they're giving is nonsensical. If there are other underlying changes, that's understandable and they should say so.

On the other hand, you're assuming other issues where there isn't yet evidence of any.

$100 is a long, long way from the high end of the market. That's like calling Target a high-end store because I could be shopping at Family Dollar, as if I'm trying to shop at Neiman Marcus. That price is less than the original cost of the Boxee Box itself, which was in turn cheaper than a lot of other media devices out there. $100 (or $99.95 or whatever) is, however, the bare minimum it would cost a Boxee user to get a device with the same features. If it doesn't play CR in 1080p (which currently no Android stick does) and doesn't play local content (which most streaming applicances don't) then it is not an equivalent replacement, and you are asking users to give up features they already rely on.

HD playback is not a niche feature. Unfortunately, CR is pulling their app from one of the few devices that their service supported that feature on well in advance of supporting it on the Android sticks you're advocating. Those same Android sticks that might someday, if CR can keep an Android developer on long enough to get around to it, support HD streaming also support local playback, so again, not really an extravagant niche feature. You just can't get it on a device that plays CR at the resolution its premium members are paying for.

That's a fair point, but that means paying a lot more than even $100 for a platform that at least seems to be safe for awhile. But then, if we could go by what seems reasonable, then the Boxee app would still be sitting neglected rather than actively removed, so...

[UPDATE]

Contrary to the assumptions of some, I posted in the other topic over on the premium members' forum hoping to find an excuse to keep paying for the service, not an excuse to switch to piracy. I still have Netflix on my Boxee, and can convert my own DVDs, Blu-Rays and iTunes purchases to work on the device with no trouble--although it's true that fansubs also will continue to work while Crunchy will not. My point with that last bit was that CR was supposed to be the magical solution to the fansubbing issue... and now it isn't. At least not for me.

The best I was able to find from the community or the company was personal attacks, blame shifting, and vague hypothetical excuses. Thanks to everyone's feedback, I've realized that my best option is to put my money where my mouth is and cancel, which I have just done.

I didn't even know this boxee thing existed until just now.

I'm still not sure why CR decided it had to be taken down though, I wish somebody from the support team would just come out and state why it happened.
