Make a Xbox one app Crunchyroll, Funimation is beating you on Xbox One if the topic is anime.

Are you certain about that?

Sophie reported the app they submitted to Microsoft earlier this month was for the 360.

Funimetion does not need an App for Xbox one. They are merged into the Xbox Video App.
(Amazon, Hululu and yet Netflix does not make that huge weight)
If I where CR staff I would make the App son because Funimation is almost alone on Xbox One.

Uhmum I am sure.

Sniff Sniff Costumers lose to CR.

Being able to rent or buy Funimation titles via the Xbox Video isn't the same as having an app for their website.

CR may not currently have a Microsoft platform developer.

San Francisco would be a very competitive environment for attracting and keeping programming talent. I've suggested before that they should strongly consider allow their talent to telecommute. After all, it would be easier to find someone willing to work for less if they lived in a medium size mid-western town than living in the land of high rent (SF), and they would have more incentive to stay with CR, since their employment options for their chosen profession would be more limited.

That said, there may be reasons that wouldn't work, or it may simply be a matter of corporate culture.

The other alternative would be to contract out the work (which is what Funimation appears to do), but CR seems to be strongly oriented toward keeping everything in house.

Actually, it does sound like work is currently ongoing for the Xbox app, based on an email I received from Bjaker today:

Interesting question!

Do you have any shows that you could toss my way that have the skips? The Engineers want to test a new player for Xbox and are asking for examples.

Regards,
~Bjaker

My guess is they may be cycling developers around different platforms depending on priority and project timelines, but I don't have any special insight into CR's processes.

Baker, if you'd rather keep that on the down-low, feel free to do what you need to.

Totally cool to share!

Yes, the engineers are looking at Xbox and working on an update for the application. I don't have any sort of timeline, but there is work being done!

Best,

Oh, cool! Looking forward to being able to use voice to control my anime the same way I do everything else I watch. Really the only thing that makes that Kinect worth having.

"Update for the application" implies this work is for the existing Xbox 360 application.

Even if you meant the 360 and not the Xbox One, I seriously doubt CR would add Kinect support as they likely have their hands full with the basic functionality. Even when they eventually launch a One app, I wouldn't expect Kinect functionality aside from what the OS can provide on its own (especially with Microsoft starting to sell units without the Kinect bundled).

It's a thread for the Xbox One app specifically. I go into this with that in mind. "Update" could just as easily mean a new version for a new console.

Not to mention, it's been over half a year and there's still no app on the One. That says to me that there's been plenty of time to work out kinks that may or may not have been found (because I seriously have trouble believing they're ignoring the console) and time has been taken to make sure it works right. Were it just a carbon copy of the app that's already on everything else, it'd be out already.

Besides, man, you don't necessarily know anymore about it than I do. Why be such a Debbie Downer about something that's just as possible as it isn't? Can't I dream?

Note the message Bjaker's was in response to (in the spoiler, or just above Bjaker's reply), and the messages further up the chain. This may be the Xbox One thread, but that specific discussion originated with a comment about the 360 app.

So you prefer to have high expectations and often be disappointed? I believe it is better to have realistic or even pessimistic expectations and then be delighted on those rare occasions when things turn out better than expected.

"Just as possible as it isn't" ignores the previous pace of CR's app development and the features those apps normally incorporated (especially in the first iteration).

Yes, I had noted that comment. The Xbox 360 app was only mentioned by asavage in relation to there not being an Xbox One app to use in its place yet. He boots up his 360 instead of his One to use Crunchyroll and would prefer not to have to. It is the only reason it was mentioned.

You might prefer to have lower or pessimistic expectations, but I choose not to. There is nothing here to suggest a Kinect-enhanced Xbox One app is any more or less likely than any other Xbox One app and I choose to assume it's a very real and likely possibility.

With all due respect (and I legitimately mean that), I do not need someone else managing my level of optimism for me. I have trouble enough on my own fighting off cynicism some days. I find I'm a lot happier when I let myself have the little things rather than just poopoo-ing all over them. And if it turns out that I'm wrong? They're little things, so it's not the end of the world.
