REFRAIN EPISODE 6: Asa's thoughts.

I'm attempting to make this a little neater since the episode discussions have been rather light individually.

Episode 6 of Refrain of the anime just now, and things really started hitting the fan!

On a personal scale, I felt that this particular episode should have been divided into two episodes as there are plenty of scenes that define Rin as a character during that three minute montage. Unfortunately it brings me back to memories of Angel Beats where some characters could have stood to be developed more, much like how Clannad was depicted. That's just me though. What do you think?

You know, in real life, when someone starts manipulating the people around them, it typically backfires.

Typically, yeah. Of course some people get away with such acts in reality. Life can be that cruel at times.

It doesn't matter if they get away with it, it backfires in ways that even the manipulator can't predict. But let me redefine "manipulator" here as someone who thinks they doing an ultimate good. Kyousuke thinks he's doing this for everyone's good I'm sure, and probably even is a bit proud of himself for doing it. Once I had a "friend", a long time one at that, who did something "for my own good". It turned out to not be, at all. I'm fine with it all now, but I'm also fine with my "friend" being very far away. Like his life was so damned good he thought he should fix everyone elses life.

Ages ago, there was a time that I involved myself in friends' affairs more than what was necessary. Most of those efforts didn't wind up amounting to much. Nowadays I tend to keep to myself and my hobbies.

I think like 6? I'm not sure of the exact number, but it sounds like an adequate amount to get through the rest of Refrain. The parts to follow were a little long-winded in the VN, so whatever is cut from here is probably going to be more sensible.

I've been waiting so long for that baseball scene. Unfortunately I think the reference to Koshiki is missed by most people, and unless you've played the VN or rewatch the anime it's easily missed, but it explains his reaction.

There was a couple of bits of dialogue in that scene that I thought were important that were missed such as Kengo's inner monologue at the end, I doubt they'll have time to show the different points of view either so it will probably be left out >:

I'm also in agreement with Asa about the ending credits. That section alone is worth an episode as we see why Riki feels he's not strong enough to protect Rin rather than him just saying it. It also shows growth in their relationship.

I sorta feel that the anime did a good job in depicting Koshiki in the first series. If I remember right, the truth of Koshiki's existence was hardly clarified in the VN until later on (through Kengo's perspective in Refrain).

REFRAIN EPISODE 7: Asa's thoughts.

Overall, I have no complaints. Expressions were a key factor in this episode, and we all know by now (since Refrain episode 1) that they can carry out expressions just fine. We have our bluescreen Kyousuke, the troubled Rin, and a Riki that refuses to give up. The pacing felt more natural in comparison to last week in my opinion. I still believe it can't get much worse than skipping that entire escape segment.. I'd better not jinx it though!

People in the comments were complaining that it was obvious to figure out whats going on now with refrain. But when you think back to the VN it's kind of the point, it gives you a massive hint in the VN, heck it even has its own separate option on the main menu so I don't really get all them complaints xD

I'm a bit disappointed that I don't think we're going to get to see everybody's perspective very well. Especially the baseball scene last episode, that is an absolute must, they need to show that from Kengo's perspective or the scene is meaningless.

As it looks though episode 8 will be for Masato, Kengo will be episode 9 and Kyousuke episode 10. This leaves 2 spare episode (As the ending will require minimum of one).
All I can hope is that they utilise these episodes well. Personally I think Masato can be covered in one episode but Kengo needs at least 2 and so does Kyousuke. There's so much depth to Kengo's character that needs to be shown and everyone needs to understand Kyousukes thinking fully to understand the entire story. I'm looking tforward to it though.

ANNOUNCEMENT

As a side note. Little Busters! EX is now confirmed on how it will work. It will consist of 8 epsiodes with one episode on the first 6 BD/DVD releases and 2 epsiodes on the final BD/DVD release. Unfortunately this means that Crunchyroll may not sub it so it will likely need to be found elsewhere. When I know of a subgroup announcing it I will notify this thread again.

The 'Mask the Saito' OVA is available on the webs now too. Last time I checked, there weren't any subtitles for it though =[

FINALLY!! It took this long to get around to some violence. Only thing is it wasn't Kyouske getting his head bashed in.
