Yes. Not all forms, probably, but it is everywhere. Propaganda is one. Social conditioning can be one, too. They just take more time to work than supernatural powers we see in fiction. Although I can't say for sure that there isn't any such thing.

I do. I'm even in the process of writing a novel that has mind manipulation as it's key component. Of course the way in my story is an unlikely method, but still.

Hypnosis, possession and such? I've seen it. But the power of the mind is amazing.

Just as an example, placbo

Yes. It has been used for hundreds of years now. The most common type used is inception. That's what advertising uses to get you to buy a product.

Okay. I see most people believe it's possible. Some suggestions I found.

"Susceptibility to mind control becomes greater when individuals are forced to focus attention on themselves, making them feel deviant or silly. To combat this:

Be sensitive to--and avoid--situations and people that put you on the spot, making you feel different, awkward, or inadequate.

Try to focus on what you are doing, rather than on thoughts about yourself. Don't generate negative internal dialogs about yourself, and never accept a chronically negative view from someone else.

Maintain some nonsocial interests that satisfy you while alone--painting, carpentry, working on cars, reading or writing, for example.

Be willing to look foolish now and then, to accept being "different" as being "special," rather than inferior.

If you can develop a concrete sense of self-worth, a sense of who you are, what you are interested in, and where your competencies lie, quite apart from the values, interests, and judgments of others, you may feel better about yourself in their presence, as well as in their absence.

Many of the most powerfully persuasive appeals are based on making people afraid or anxious. The following are suggestions for reducing this influence:

No matter what the relationship, avoid getting sucked into unwanted confessions that may later be used against you. Many cults and mind-control systems use public confessions, self-exposure, "games," and the like to catalog the weaknesses of their followers for later exploitation.

Avoid making decisions when under stress, particularly in the presence of the person who has triggered the emotional reaction. Tell them you'll decide mañana [tomorrow].

As you feel yourself becoming uncomfortably aroused, begin taking slower, deeper breaths to help your body relax.

Gnawing feelings of guilt can also provide a powerful impetus for personal change. To counteract such tactics, learn to confront your frustrations and fears. Don't let people make you feel indebted to them."

Look up 1935 Germany. A whole country gone completely insane because of the manipulative rallies, tactics, and propaganda of the Nazi party. To be fair, it was Germany's poor economic state that laid the foundation, but the verbose Nazis made the seed grow and bear fruit.

How about all of the propaganda that brainwashed Japan...all that bushido-code nonsense, racial superiority rhetoric, and the god-emperor notion.

And flash forward to 2001 'Murica and the Bush administration.

Yeah, I'd say mind manipulation works in a big, big way.

Think for yourself. Question authority.

one thing that is missing is being a great liar. This isn't really on the basis of mind control, though it does fuzz the perception of what reality is for the other person. Brainwashing is also all around us, just look at nationalism and politics. Conservatives are taught to hate liberals simply for being liberals, liberals are taught to hate conservatives, Americans are taught that socialism is evil and they are the best at everything. Cults and hate groups are another form a brainwashing. Neo-nazis and the Aryan society truly believe they are the superior to all others, Westboro Baptist Church members believe that they are right and God is punishing the United States, NAACP believe that everyone is out to get the black man when statistically speaking most modern racism is towards hispanics and middle easterns. extremist groups such as Al Qaida believe what they are doing is right and we are the evil ones. There is no pure mind in the world anymore, everyone is manipulated by something and someone, also those who claim to manipulate people tend to be the ones who are getting manipulated.

It is messed up and should never be allowed to happen.

I've been hypnotized before. It's creepy. You are fully aware of what you are doing yet you have no way to resist, or any thoughts of resisting. At least in my experience...
