Samsung BD goes into screen saver mode running CR app

I have noticed on Samsung smart/wireless Blu-ray DVD players, the display/screen will sometimes go blank and show the Samsung screensaver (floating Samsung logo) after several CR episodes have been played. The video is still playing in the background, you can hear the audio continuing. My wife and I have to hit a button (any button) on the Blu-ray player remote to get out of screensaver mode. Pressing keys on the TV remote has no affect, so I know it's coming from the BD player. Once it starts, it occurs more frequently, forcing us to exit and restart the CR app to get it to stop.

I have a Samsung BD-E5900 and BD-F5900 and both show this symptom. At first, I thought it might be the player itself, but this issue doesn't happen when running Hulu or any other app, just Crunchyroll. Has anyone else seen this?

It sounds as if the Samsung firmware has some type of API that tells the system to shut off the screensaver or sets some type of "active video" flag, but the CR app didn't implement the call.

One possible workaround would be to check the menu options on your player and see if there is an option to set the screensaver timer to a longer period. Assuming the system doesn't autoplay the next episode, or you normally fast forward through the OP or ED, any duration of 25 minutes or more should do the trick.

Thanks, but no. No option exists in firmware for power/screen saving, etc. Apparently, the screensaver kicks in after about 8-10 minutes of "inactivity" which is why I thought it was odd that it would happen in the middle of an app. I called Samsung support, they pointed back to the app vendor. The autoplay flag is off, but I might turn it on as a test, though. The Hulu or Netflix apps don't have this issue regardless of the flag setting, though. But I won't hold my breath. FYI, I don't like to fast forward as this can screw up the episode marker and takes an effort to get back on track.

Basically, I wanted to see if anyone else experienced this while using a Samsung smart Blu-ray player, any model type.

One workaround in the meantime could be to hit pause/play a couple of times during the episode.

This can happen depending on the model you have.
You should be able to disable the screensaver.
What model Samsung device do you have?

Any update on this or possible ETA on a fix?

I just bought a Samsung BD-F5900 (hoping to use the Crunchyroll app on it) and I'm experiencing the same issue.
There is no option to turn off the screensaver on the device.
I'm on firmware: 1013.5

I have had this issue on my bluray as well, if it happens the easiest thing to do to clear the screen is just hit the "up" button on the remote and it's gone with no problems. Finish your show and then go to system menu and turn it off.

That is written for app creators. all API etc look that overly technical. Your average end user would never need to see that. If you think that is crazy you have most likely never seen http://developer.android.com/guide/index.html

Ok, it has been quite a while since I started this thread. The problem occurs on all Samsung Blu-Ray players. My son has a BD-E6500, same thing. It only happens with the Crunchyroll app, not others such as HuluPlus or Netflix. So far, I haven't seen any updates to address this.

From the previous posts, this looks like a coding issue with the app, not a setting within the player itself. Did Crunchyroll decide to drop this issue as unimportant? Just curious. Because of all the problems with the Roku 3 app, I'm having to go back to my Blu-Ray player to see anything on Crunchyroll. Having to press a button on the remote to wake up the screen gets anoying after a while (the app/sound/episode still plays, but the video is replaced with a Samsung screensaver).

It seems to me that they make the app & forget it . Remember , they stated that 720p & 1080p was going to be by the end of 2012 . It's 3/4 thru 2014 and still no HD . The Xbox 360 app never shows it's at HD quality but it launched at 720p . Microsoft won't allow 1080p except for themselves & Vudu streaming service .

Apparently CR did something to stop the screen saver kicking in . I watched Chaika the Coffin Princess without touching the remote . When I realized what happened I tried another show with success . Now if we could now get HD...
