The title asks the question. What does a show need to do to make you cry?

I don't just cry over anything you know. Murder, abuse, and misunderstandings don't tug at my hearts strings. Someone is being mean? It happens.

For me, it's when someone's hard work and effort is ignored or mocked. Just imagining a hypothetical situation in which this happens causes me to cry.

Imagine this situation.

Some guy or girl asks their respective romantic interest on a date. After the half-hearted yes, they happily prepare. And I'm talking PREPARE here.
It doesn't have to be a perfect date, they just have to put a genuine effort into it. Buying flowers, cooking food, finding some picnic spot, it doesn't matter. As long as they have high hopes.

Then the date is a no show, and not for a good reason. They just thought it would be a hassle, and never got out of bed, or perhaps a good show came on and they started watching that instead. Perhaps they ordered a Pizza and was full afterwards.
You know, just not taking that date seriously. Then comes the reveal and the tears.

So, what makes you cry?

I don't know if there is a specific situation, but anything that feels real and human, genuine and true has the potential to make me cry. I'm also more likely to cry over something powerfully good than very sad.

Compassion, caring, true love. Stuff like that.

Also, the music usually has a big part in my reaction.

In anime specifically ? None, I have a heart of stone, very few characters in anime have made any connection with me at all to make me feel that way at all, Probably because I connect allot better with cerebral characters and anyone who is a master of schemes and plans, I rarely if ever feel any empathy for animated characters.

For me it's when someone makes some sort of sacrifice, that has extreme negative repercussions for themselves, but they do it anyway. It's not just a character dying, but when a character gives up something like their life, abilities, memories, or reputation. This doesn't make me cry in most anime, but if done right, it can get me very emotional.

Things like

and Ash letting Butterfree go

There has to be more to the loss than just "we'll never see them again." It has to be something like "they permanently gave up a part of themselves for the sake of others. It makes it even worse when the sacrifice ends up being in vain. Then I just get angry.

Well not crying per se, but some farewell scenes followed up by a good soundtrack can be very emotional.

same, I get really choked up at farewell scenes. graduations, goodbyes, characters dying.. I almost went and got a screencap from Hyperdimension Neptunia to give an example, but even that got to me. the entire last 5 minutes of episode 10 is horrible

Oh yeah, that kind of thing gets me too.

Actually, well done "parent" stuff gets at me a lot lately. Log Horizon put a lump in my throat last episode doing something similar, not sacrific, just a kid in a lot of trouble responding with coughs to the main character's questions over voicechat. It was a great scene.

But the trick to pull at my heartstrings is that it has to be... understated. I don't give a damn when the violins start playing at max volume with big neon signs proclaiming "THIS IS A SAD SCENE" flashing on the screen. But give me something small and human I melt. Like Viral's scene in episode 26 of Gurren-Lagann. If you saw the show you know what I mean.

To be honest it's the background music. It just sets the mood. Yes, you can tell when the drama is coming up but the music really makes you cry. When I watched Angel Beats and well you know.... I teared up but no crying then the credits start up and I cry for 40 minutes
