I've posted a picture of myself on CR before. It was actually me in my Halloween costume. Then I got embarrassed after a bit and removed it. It would just be awkward for people, since they all see me as some faceless entity.

But I don't post pictures of other people. Seems pointless, since they can do that themselves.

I'm not even entirely sure what you're trying to get at. I never said it was OK??? What does attractiveness have to do with stealing and using another persons identity have to do with that? Its low self esteem and bad deciscion making. Furthermore, not entirely sure why were bringing more anime into this discussion? It has nothing to do with the fact that regular people are taking other peoples pictures and pretending to be them.

@oni: Cyberbullying happens whether people are honest or not. Also, yeah, catfishing is catfishing no matter who starts the thread. And attractiveness is subjective.

It's low self-esteem and bad decision making to SOME PEOPLE. To others, it could be a way to kill time or escape for a tiny while. It's not wrong to want to be someone else, is it? Not morally wrong, anyway. I've also known some writers who try to imitate others in order to gain a new perspective for something they are working on. I'm never convinced that imitation is ever truly successful since it's impossible to be someone else from that person's POV. You can only be someone else from your own POV. Sort of like how you as a person can imagine trying to be a bat, but you can't imagine trying to be a bat AS A BAT.

Masquerading as someone is not the same as identity theft (which causes monetary loss and is illegal). The way I see it, it's like a person has slipped on a mask of another person and has gone into public to act silly. It's not necessarily wrong and not very many people will be convinced since it's too fake to be convincing. At the end of the day, they AREN'T that person and their imitation doesn't do much, if anything, to the subject being imitated. Also, most internet-users are aware of people pretending to be others...it's not likely to do anything big in the long run.

I reverse image search everyone as well :P
I use my real photos, but only people I have added as friends may see them. I feel that was the safer route seeing as how banning people sometimes provokes some angry responses.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to bring up personal responsibility.

I rarely shown my pics here and someone confessed at me.
I'm like, "dude, we're just discussing and quoting about movies. How the hell I made your stomach got butterflies? You're in-love with the idea of whatsome. Not whatsome itself."
Told this person to take a two-week off not talking to me to see if it's just a momentarily crush.
It was momentary.

In my case, I was using a Mr. Panda pic.

Well it's up to each individual person. Do you want an entire site of people to see you or not? If not, there's more than enough ways to set your privacy to where only friends can see you.

Also about catfish, I remember a couple of the other mods talked about all watching that together. Sounded too depressing for my taste though so I opted out. I dislike when people intentionally lie like that, there's really no reason I can think of to.

Of course it's morally wrong. How about I find a picture of you and pretend that it's me? You're making it seem simple and OK, which its not. And I'm pretty sure it's bad decision making regardless.

Yeah, simply called faking a picture..

Happens a loooooooooooooot in other social networks, don't fret if people on CR have no clue what the hell you're talking about because a lot of them who post on these forums openly talk about how they hate social network sites and express how proudly they have never used one

I've met a lot of girls who used pictures of other site models like Dacey Loxx or w/e, pretty pathetic imo but they have their reasons for how they grew up and they'll move on to using their own pictures someday. Funniest ones are the guys who google "Six pack hot guy" in Images and claim that they're the guys in the photos, media at its finest!

because after seeing the rest of these posts, I see a lot of lost and confused CR users who have completely missed the point lmao

Yep, I agree Completely, its almost impossible to stop someone from taking a picture of you in public and doing whatever they want with it. But it is quite easy to set privacy settings to make sure only the people you want to can see your pictures.

Also catfish is usually a quite depressing show, there are some where it isn't. A lot of the ones I've seen is like people who live relatively close to each other and one person just doesn't care to see the other person or something like that. I haven't seen a ton of it but from the ones I have seen the reason is so depressing is because one person wanted to meet the other, while the other has no interest in meeting, talking to or doing anything with the first person aside from online activities.

I had to google catfish, then urban dictionary
results: "A catfish is someone who pretends to be someone they're not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances." - urban dictionary, sbacker

huh well you learn something new everyday

I've never done it, don't plan on it
I do plan on posting my picture, eventually, when I get a full beard...

People pretending to be others seek something most of the time, yes their looks.

It's really not okay for them to use other people their pictures, even if they have a really good reason, I mean you must've learned that by watching Catfish, and I totally agree with you.

Also, putting an Anime pic at your profile doesn't have to do anything with the fact that people are using other people their pictures for their own issues, they might probably have.

But... what do you want to do about it?
It'll keep happening anyway, as long as people with low self-esteems exists.
