As the thread of the title says

Not limiting to any particular anime season

For me, just to quickly choose one, would be Samurai Flamenco.
I mean I was kind of excited for the superhero aspect before starting the show but after watching it, it blew all my expectations out of the water. It's that good.

Another one would be Bakemonogatari. I went in with no expectations, I left a Monogatari fan.

flowers of evil
hunter x hunter
chihayafuru
my little monster

went in with no expectations, expected these animes to be stupid and cheesy, but they exceeded my expectation

Ooh, Samurai Flamenco sounds pretty interesting. Honestly, I started watching Ouran Highschool Host Club because I was bored and drunk and I ended up loving it. xD It's gotta be in my top five favorites.

Edit: I know it's not an anime, but it says ''shows'' in the title.
I'd say True Blood. I was willing to give up on the show after the first 2 episodes because of the main female actor, and the southern accent that I truly dislike. I just finished watching the first season, I might watch the next seasons as well.

Edit2: One anime that I didn't think I would watch entirely is Madoka Magika. The first couple episodes were kind of boring, but then it became bloody and full of evilness. I liked it.

The World God Only Knows has got to be the best example of this happening to me. I had just finished watching The End of Evangelion and was in tang-induced depression when I had decided to watch it on a whim. Thankfully it's like the happiest most amazingly great show. I still think it should have been a long-runner...

Living not that for from Shreveport, I can tell you that her accent is actually really, really good, even though it's very heavy. Especially considering she was raised in New Zealand. I think it's more impressive than anything lol

Oh it is good, that's for sure. I'm not used to watch shows with people talking with a southern accent, it is somewhat new to me.
I guess I'm more used to the upper-class New York accent we hear a lot in most shows/movies nowadays haha.

For things that have started airing/are still airing this season:
Hunter x Hunter - This looked weird and boring. All the thumbnails seemed to be of a small boy smiling, but to my surprise, it was a somewhat dark show that kept you going.
Non Non Biyori - It looked kind of interesting, but I went in not seeming to care too much about it. However, the show is hilarious and it's a fun and charming little surprise every Monday.
Coppelion - The reviews didn't look too good, and the art was a bit different. After watching the first episode, I was glued, and it seemed like nothing I had watched before. The plot is interesting and the execution is good.

Overall:
Monogatari - The animation was weird, characters seemed to sit/stand in places for long amounts of time and talk, and I wasn't that into it when I first started. However, it pulled me in and became one of my favorite shows.

Angel Beats: It was one of the first anime I watched, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had seen a few clips of it, which made it look hilarious (it's not hilarious ). What I got was an emotional roller coaster and what remains to this day one of my favorite series.

I do this "thing" with my sister every few months, in which we watch the first episode of a random list of anime we've saved up, and decide which one is worth the watch next.

Many a show is dropped. We discovered Gurren Lagann, Magi, Solty Rei, and The Slayers and kept with those.

Mobile Suit Gundam. I had expected to force my way through a massive 42 episode 1979's anime.

Instead, the show drew me in and didn't let go. That opening episode was genius, HE KILLED PEOPLE! Like, dayum. He accidently maybe-kills his dad, the crew is being chased by the enemy army, and they have to team up and stick together!

It had everything a show needs to draw you in, and the ending....among the best I've ever seen. It had everything, from the final-duel to the epic space battle among the stars.
