Log Horizon I thought this was just going to be a rip off of sao but it turned out from a gamers point of view much much better

I came into this thread to post exactly that. Log Horizon is by far the biggest postiive surprise.

I won't count any of the ongoing series yet from this Fall lineup but for me off the top of my head probably Cardcaptor Sakura, NANA, Hunter x Hunter, Phantom Requiem, Shigofumi, Eccentric Family, Beast of Erin, and Princess Tutu.

Madoka Magica. The magical girl genre is one that I tend not to like very much.

I never expected to actually like:

Pretty Cure

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
: I only knew of the fighting game and thought it would be awful like the street fighter anime.. then I saw a trailer for All Star Battle and HAD to watch the show for the flamboyantly eccentric multi-colored macho men ^ ^; Speedwagon is totally BL for Jonathan btw. He even died a bachelor with a broken heart <3

A Certain Scientific Railgun: Touma was already having perv encounters with every character in season one despite the interesting story. The spin-off season focused on the girl whose best friend is a lesbian that pervs on her, and her other friend liked to lift up another friend's skirt. But, strangely, the character development was perfect, and it made me want to watch the amazing Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day
Saki
: mahjong with mahjong super powers and lesbian undertones

Princess Tutu

Steins;Gate
: I had never heard of it before (and people weren't talking about it yet) and I didn't think much of the animation studio.

For shows I'd say "24" didn't know what it was about going into it and it's by far my favorite all time TV series.

For anime... I'd say Red Garden was surprisingly enjoyable, it didn't seem like it'd be the type of show (especially with its animation style) that would hold my interest for that long.
For this season, definitely Golden Time and Walkure Romanze, I hoped both would be watchable but didn't expect them to be enjoyable.

Madoka Magica and Log Horizon suddenly sound like shows I need to check out.

For this season Golden Time took me by surprise, I'm really enjoying that one.
Samurai Flamenco and Log Horizon were massively better than I expected as well.

Going to name the two off the top of my head I would call surprises to me: SNAFU & Kotoura-San. Not to say I thought they would be bad, but I was blown away by them.

Non-anime hit show: The Walking Dead

If strictly talking about anime from CR, Kyousougiga was a big surprise after Shugo Chara and Usagi Drop. When I though there was nothing more to watch or get excited about something tends to pop up and slap me silly...

Then there is this:

Indeed Railgun and Magical Index were really big surprises of late. I've know about the series for a while but I was trying to limit stuff I get addicted to... Oddly enough this is the second series I wind up wanting to watch mostly on the basis of the music it contains. I did that with Utena with out knowing what Utena was all about. Tho this go with Railgun/Index it was mostly because of the second season intro group, fripSide. The group also sung the intro song for the OADs of the long running Ah! My Goddess series so I some what got hooked via another addiction.

Just hope there is more of Railgun and Index... :)
