Michiko and Hatchin, It was like the second anime I only shed a tear at the end. It was like watching a movie.

Baccano: thought it would be a weird Japanese perspective of 1930 america BOY was i wrong
Highschool DxD: okay ill admit it i freaking LOVE this show its perverted but honestly the best harem anime out there and it was my first harem anime so i had natural unease going into it
Spice and Wolf: thought it was gonna be a furry anime again i was very very very wrong in fact I'm on volume 2 of the light novel
Katekyo Hitman Reborn: first thought it was another super serious spiky haired high school boy drama and i got a pleasant surprise that got me back into anime after i skipped 2006 to 2010 due to personal issues
that's all i can think of right now

Samurai Flamenco? that's sounds/looks good

I didn't think I would like the anime I'm watching right now: Nagi no Asukara ...I could give you 100 more animes if it was about 'anime you thought you'd like but you didn't"

I generally tend to go into anime without expectations, so I won't be disappointed with high hopes, but a few still catch me by surprise.

Steins;Gate was great, and took me by surprise how well executed it was.
One Piece is another one. I had long heard of Naruto and Bleach, so i was surprised to see that the least known of the big 3 was the best.
Hunter x Hunter 2011 series. The first series didn't impress me, but the second one was a big turn around.
Gintama turned out to be my favourite comedy & a long runner too.

There were also a few disappointments though, but those aren't for this thread.

Nagi no Asukara. I'm not even sure why I decided to watch it and it's not the most exciting show in the world, but it's been my favorite new anime this season.

From this season Non Non Biyori, Log Horizon, and Kyousougiga. I had a list of everything i wanted to watch written down, right before the season started.

Log Horizon: Read the description and thought," Well, SAO's alfheim arc was utterly disappointing maybe this will be the kind of trapped in videogame/otherworld story I've wanted for a while. It's exactly that, every character is useful to the group in some way, the main character isn't some loner who gets inexplicable plot destroying power boosts/skills like in some other shows.

Non Non Biyori: I clicked just for kicks and before the first episode was over it was added to my queue. It's hilarious, relaxing and makes really bad mondays good. I found Nichijou the same way and that's one of my all time favorites now.

Kyousougiga: Added in the middle of the season, and I figured I should give it a shot since Crunchyroll felt it was necessary to add it. It's become my favorite of the Fall 2013 season: the art is beautiful, the story is engaging, and I love the characters and their back stories. The great music is a plus.

Both Wanna Be The Strongest In The World and Walkure Romanze really took me by surprise at just how much I am enjoying them when I honestly didn't think I would that much

White Album, at first I thought that it was another love-triangle Anime without a plot, but its actually a good Anime with awesome character development. Loving it so far, and the songs.. are just out of this world. <3

I'd probably go with:
Steins;gate- I entered it only hearing about how good it was. I can easily say it was one of the few animes I went out of my way to go get the full series.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya- My first anime to help me get back into anime earlier this year. I heard how good it was from quite a while ago, and decided to give it a chance. Plus if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't probably would of cared to look up future anime (like Steins;gate.)

Hunter x Hunter (2011) always skeptical when watching shounen, mainly because I tend to compare one another, but honestly turned out to be my all-time favorite anime ever, how unexpected, now I basically worship this anime.

Kaiji : Ultimate Survivor I watched this anime cause the psychological genre is my favorite, didn't expect the anime to be this intense, one of the only experiences I had in anime where I felt like the protagonist in a realistic manner, absolutely brilliant.

Chiayaya Furu all the way. The thumbnail for the series made it look like some very flowery romance series but once it starts and you get roped into the Karuta matches its impossible to give up, and I've never really liked sports series.

Some of the series' that have surprised me the most have been:

Steins;Gate : Heard people talking about it, then decided to give it a go when CR announced it was about to be taken off the site.

Binbogami-ga! : Wasn't planning on checking this one out at first because I thought it would JUST be a fanservice show, but It has to be one of the anime I've enjoyed the most.

Space Brothers: Didn't have any expectations going into it, but it was one of the first things that started airing that season and I'm more inclined to try more series' out early on. Now it's in my top 10 favorite anime of all time list.

Outbreak Company: Going by the synopses, this show should not be as good as it is, but it's in my top. 3 favs of this season

Chihayafuru: I thought I'd get a cheesy shoujo card game that would be good for a few laughs... Yeah, I was wrong. It's way better than that. :P

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia: I don't really care for amnesia or supernatural based shows, so I thought this would be a drop for me. Was pleasantly surprised to see a lot more substance than that and the middle episodes are among my favorite anime episodes in general.

Kokoro Connect: Again, thought this show would be good for a few laughs, but ended up enjoying it for more than that.

The Devil is a Part-Timer: I needed something to watch on FUNimation since I had a subscription to them. I wasn't expecting much from it, but it was way more entertaining than I thought it would be.

These are the ones that I could think of from off the top of my head, but I always have a show or two each season that surprises me.
