I majored in History with a specific field in Europe. I am now currently in graduate school for my masters in Medieval history. I picked my field initially because before I started high school I bought a book titled Warriors of God: Richard the Lionhearted and Saladin in the Third Crusade by James Reston Jr. It was a bad history, but it was really well written. It captured my imagination.

So yeah, I got really into crusading history and it brought me down the path. Trouble is that today most crusader historians are expected to learn Arabic. That's on top of the basic requirements of Latin, English (my native tongue), French, and German. For crusader historians, Greek was already expected as well. Not to mention other languages are being pushed too, such as Aramaic, etc. So it's too intensive for me. So I am currently looking for another area in medieval history for myself.

I'm finishing highschool this year, and I will be studying piano performance in college. I actually wish there was a degree that was a more general "musical expertise" kind of thing because I'm not only interested in performance but also in music composition and pedagogy. Some people say I'm too ambitious, but most of the music professors I've talked to were encouraging and suggested that I major in piano performance and take composition classes on the side; then I should look at music composition as a focus for my graduate degree. I also have a long standing interest in computer science and write C# code as a hobby--mostly writing small applications for friends and people who ask--but I'm unsure of whether or not I'll pursue it as a minor or similar in college, I might just continue getting better on my own

I was a jazz studies/performance major, and minored in music education. I'd like to go back to school, but I'm not exactly sure what for yet

I don't know if you've already decided upon a school, but if you have, check the program. A lot of music programs require some sort of introductory composition/arranging class for performance majors, or at the very least have those classes available that you can pick up as an elective. It wouldn't be as intensive as being in a composition program, but it would certainly whet your appetite and give you a solid foundation should you take up composition for your graduate studies.

As for pedagogy, look into some entry-level music education courses. They tend to deal a bit with pedagogy. Again, wouldn't be as intensive, but whetting your appetite and all that.

No I haven't decided on a school yet, but I have it narrowed down to three. And yes, you're right, all of them require a class in music arrangement or composition. I'd probably fill most of the electives with composition classes.

By the way, what do you do as a jazz musician, and what instrument do you play?

I played the trumpet/flugelhorn. I quit shortly after college, seriously burnt out and lost the passion, but I freelanced all through college.

My current major is Biology, Not sure where to go from there but I'm good at it and I don't mind it so things could be worse, I have to say though my passion remains dormant. I'll figure out what my passion is before too long though. . . hopefully before I rack up unsurmountable debt.
