Do you think that watching something like bleach or naruto would make you into a person who values a friend more than normal or makes you more likely to fight for something you believe in strongly.

No.

edit: Okay, I'll give a decent answer.

I could probably find catharsis in more shallow things. Anime is not high-brow entertainment, but it doesn't need to be in order to provoke thought. At its best, I find that anime may have shown me a few things I've seen before, or taught me a few things I thought I knew. It's themes and characters can be interesting, even engaging, but its nothing top-shelf in terms of literature, you know.

At its worst, there's all the misogamy, melodrama, excessive sexuality, stereotypes, mind-rotting writing...you know it might be more plausible that anime makes me a worse person.

Has it inspired personal growth? No. But then again neither has any book or movie or other artwork I've been exposed to. Such things color who I am subtly--but I've yet to have some life-altering revelation.

Actually, now that I think about it, music may have inspired me in such a way...but primarily by promoting introspection.

Yes. and no.

Yes in the sense that anime can teach you a lot about life.

No in the sense that watching too much anime results in having no life. (As in, it does not do a good job encouraging one to live out those life lessons, but I suppose that's different for each person)

It's all about the balance. A balance that I have not mastered lol

No, it's all well and good enjoying a niche part of pop culture but watching anime doesn't make you a better person in the slightest.

Um no I don't think so. If it's going to teach me anything, it's going to be the Japanese language.

No, I started sympathizing with the devil long before I started watching anime.

Watching anime makes me a better person?

Expanding on that, I usually watch anime for the entertainment value rather than any life lessons it may provide.
Even slice of life I watch for entertainment rather than anything deep and meaningful like friendship even when separated. I acknowledge that these shows present these kinds of ideas but for the most part, they have no real influence on my daily life.

Does it? No - not passively.

But if you're watching anime that has morals you agree with, you can actively use it to make yourself a better person. Its like how you can read a moral from a story or a book and apply it to your life. In that way, you might argue that the story made you a better person.

But for that to happen, not only must the anime actually have a good moral, but it also requires that the moral means enough to you to actually implement it into your life.

So in some sense, can anime make you a better person? I'd say yes. But does it automatically and passively do so? Certainly not

No. I was never a better person to begin with.
