I know it can happen because I know a couple who are married after meeting each other on Everquest years ago and they are still married today, However I want to say maintaining online relationships can be harder than in person.

It can happen, but, like with face-to-face and other long-distance relationships, the likelihood of a long-term relationship is shaky. They all face similar problems, though connections that form without physical contact have a marked worry of, "How would the relationship go if we interact in person?" Of course, identity fraud and whatnot are more easily pulled off, too; however, that's another story.

I fell in love online.

Wait, I was 14 and naive.

Never mind then.

Seriously though, I've never had an online relationship work, and I don't know anyone who has had one work, but I'm sure it's possible. Albeit highly unlikely, I'm sure it is still nonetheless possible.

I've fallen in love online, but it kind of backfired on me. She lived on the other side of the world, and plane ticket prices and immigration laws were a huge barrier to get around. She visited me for six months, but we ended up splitting a year or so after that because it was just too stressful having to deal with all that stuff just to be together, especially since saving up the necessary money took a long time. We split amicably and are still friends though, so I look back on it all fondly and wish her all the best with her new boyfriend.

I'd caution against trying to find romance online unless you're prepared to deal with the complications it entails. If you're like me and don't care too terribly about physical intimacy, it can be done, but as I've learned, many people require more direct contact than the internet can offer. If you're the type who likes to be physically close to your significant other, online dating probably won't work for you unless you have the resources to bridge the location gap.

I have two stories.

In boardgamegeek I read about a story (years ago) from someone who didn't believe that any of the online matching services worked. He had a friend who believed that they indeed worked. So they had an ongoing discussion about it. Finally, the first guy said, "Alright, I'm going to register in one of those services and I'm going to write a profile that's brutally honest with my pros and cons. I'll show you no one will be interested in me." So he did write the profile and a woman contacted him... and long story short she became his wife.

My other story is about my aunt. She fell in love through the Internet, after a long time interacting through the Internet she flied to his place with the idea of staying permanently, some months later they had some intense disagreements about stuff and so they broke up. She flew back here, spent some time on depression, and now she's recovered.

So, it's a gamble.

So from reading this I have come to the conclusion that

1) most of us agree it is possible to fall in love while online

However
2) Its highly unlikely to last as it comes with some pretty big issues such as everyday life.

I just think the bad outweigh the good, there are certain mannerisms that we all have that can only be picked up on when together, even Skype can't do that, or things like a smell that you automatically grow to love. Then there is the issue of how we all like to go out once in a while, you can t do that with someone you've met online.

Its a shame because I think meeting people online is in principle an awesome idea because it means there are so many more people to find.

Yes. Unless they move in and their parents are strict Chinese traditionalists who freak out and cause 8 years of turmoil and you wind up alone praying for the adamant spectre to bring you sweet surrender.

Only through text? I think since it has become an increasingly popular communication method, people can fall in love with the idea of the person they are talking to. Then there's the issue of whether your internet identity shows who you want to be or who you truly are. Regardless, I think it's possible to develop emotions, feel affectionate, and truly care about someone on the internet. Even if the "real" world is separate from the world of cyberspace, the feelings that you experience are real.
