update, PLEASE READ THIS!! would anyone be interested in me creating a thread for CD sales pertaining to OP/ED and character songs for anime?

So, I've decided that I wish to share with you sales data from the Japanese market. This is only for anime Blu-Ray and DVD disc sales. Here we can discuss series and how they're selling in Japan, why they're selling, or maybe why they're not performing as well. It's always interesting to learn about what the otaku view as 'buy worthy.'

RULES:
1. Be civil.
2. No flaming/baiting comments. Criticism is welcome, but comments such as 'This show is shit, why is it selling.' will be reported. (Ex. of criticism: 'I think this show isn't selling well due to bad pacing, or maybe I felt that the story was sort of bland.')
3. No comments such as 'The Japs have shit taste.' Those comments will not be tolerated and will be reported as well.
4. No comments about illegal activities. Can't believe I have to even state this, but comments about buying counterfeit goods, or downloading illegally are against CR's rules, and as such that is a rule here.
5. No comments about 'this is all that sells' and so on, because if you'd look at the data you'd see things are actually pretty varied.

Some things to know before we get started:

• Anime discs are normally sold in volumes. (2 episodes on a volume, usually.)
• Anime disc sales are usually put into averages when all volumes are out and stop ranking at Oricon.
• Averages are the average sales of all the volumes for a series.
• 2,899 copies sold on average is considered the 'Manabi Line.' This is supposedly what an anime would need to sell on average to be considered to meet production values. (Note: Some anime have higher budgets than others thus they require more than this to meet production costs. If Monogatari sold this much it'd be considered a flop, while if Karneval sold this much it might just meet production costs.) Please see someanithing's commentary on this here.
• 5,000-10,000 copies sold range from mild success to a small/decent sized success
• 10,000-29,000 copies sold is considered a large success.
• 30,000+ copies sold is considered a very large success and more than likely means that this series reached mainstream appeal.
Note: Disc sales aren't all that matter for how successful a series it. A boost to the adaption's source sales is important as well. This thread shares manga/LN sales. Anime can also be considered successful through selling merch, CDs, and other extras.

Edit:
How this thread will be run:
1. The data will be changed each week, and a reply with the new data will be added to this forum.
2. The 'releases for next week' reply will be updated every time there are new releases.
3. For certain series I will post the volume preview art, and the bonuses they will be having. (Note: I can not follow every series on twitter and the like, I will post what I find, but if you want me to look for a certain series preview art I will try and get it for you.)

Link to Amazon with current rankings for preorders.
(This is in Japanese.)
Amazon.jp offers a sort of 'stalker' type thing. You can pre-order a series from here and it will usually give an estimate for that volume. Depending on the anime Amazon can be very accurate, things that are aimed more at men seem to match Amazon predictions while things aimed at women are usually underestimated. Also, if an anime is mainstream and has a store front effect Amazon can underestimate.
How To Read Amazon Stalker:
**Current Rank/**Previous Rank/**Pre-order points/**Nico reservations/Release date/Title

Informational links:
Individual volumes sales for 2013 series here.
Individual volumes sales for 2014 series here.

If you have anything you're curious about related to sales of series, dates, bonuses of a volume and so on, you can ask me and I'll do my best to try and answer it!

I too enjoy looking at these kind of things, so it's no waste of time for me! I'm very happy to be able to share it! Though I feel my original posts needs a bit of editing done to it. haha.

Erm, with /a/, I would recommend being wary of them. A lot of the people in those threads do not know what they're talking about, but yes. You can get sales information from here!

While Attack on Titan is still on top it has without a doubt sunk quite a bit from its first volume sales (80,725(DVD+BD) - Shingeki no Kyojin)
I'm hoping the next volume that is bundled with the visual novel of Levi and Erwin will get a significant boost.

edit:
I've edited more of the forum description. Hope it helps, and isn't too much for anyone. Anyway, I think I'm done with editing that for the night.

I use ANN blu-ray and DVD rankings which is based on Oricon ! I think to be honest The list should include Disney titles or others to gauge how Japan's anime stacks up against other releases on the list! Example Monsters University beats out Attack On Titan Blu-Rays! I know it may be a minor point but it is what Japan is buying!

Japan's Animation DVD Ranking, November 18-24 On this list Despicable Me is second! Again Japan is buying other than their own releases!

Details of Free! v.5 are out. The bonuses have really caught my eye and I can honestly say KyoAni has gone far out in serving their market.

(Side A is without a doubt my favorite part, the slash pairing is my guilty pleasure.)

If MU was something related to anime then I would have posted it, but it's not so it doesn't get shared. My information is also based off of Oricon, just only for anime related discs.

This kind of thing is to be expected, things like Pixar have mainstream appeal while anime is a very niche market. Only things like Eva and Madoka come close to reaching a success like a Disney or Studio Ghibli film, but I don't believe they have ever actually come close to those numbers. They're extremely mainstream, but not quite like something known worldwide like Disney. I see Disney stuff being bought at certain Japanese online shops a lot though, recently The Little Mermaid special edition was released and it was showing up.

Heh, thanks for the warning. I usually like reading the threads because it's just a bunch of jerks having fun, for the most part. The SamFlam threads have been hilarious this past week.

For next week expect Uta-Pri and Monogatari domination. Those are the two biggest titles coming out this week.
I'm waiting for Uta-Pri v.7 to see if it will come with an event ticket or not, I'd think they'd announce something like that already, but if that volume gets that event ticket I imagine a repeat of v.1 will happen and that will sky-rocket Uta-Pri's average. Girls really like that STARISH group.(Course I don't blame them.)

Kill la Kill currently is looking at around 8k for the BD's. Unless something goes horribly wrong, I can not see Kill la Kill not being at least a decent sized success, but I highly doubt it will be a large success like what we saw with Free! last season. I also doubt that it will pull a Free!. (Free! was heavily underestimated by Amazon stalker due to the fans buying from Animate and shops with better bonuses.) Of course, with it being two cour it has the chance to rise with later volumes even if the first doesn't do that well.

And, if you want to help KLK out, you can always pre-order a volume or as many as you can at least. The Blu-ray cover for the volume is very nice, I recommend actually purchasing it. Also the goodies are nice! Sadly, I will not be importing KLK.

But some decent news, the OP for Kill la Kill sold around 15k copies. That's pretty decent. That and it's looking like Kill la Kill will either be the 3rd or 4th best selling show in the Fall season depending on Little Busters ~Refrain~.

Has SamFlam gotten any better? I had to drop it due to not having much time. But the only threads I go into are the Free! threads to get some HQ scans. I don't like spending time on that site cause their rampant hate for anything female aimed gets a little annoying. Actually, the general 'man-child' attitude many on the site have just gets annoying and I try to waste as little time on it as possible.

Hopefully it's able to keep this 30k average it has so far, but either way it's still the second best selling show of summer. and it's in the top 5 of the whole year.
