I started catching it when I was in third grade, though I wasn't able to buy the cards, watch much of the show, and play the games like I wanted to. My mom and then-future stepdad weren't against it, but my family was struggling financially. Money was too tight for my mom and stepdad to spend much on us kids, or even give us much money to use. I spent most of my childhood yearning from afar. My crowning glory was a pokemon booklet and a few cards in 4th grade, but I got rid of it after several years. I wore them out. By the time things loosened up for my family (middle school), I had given up trying to learn alot about it. I'm currently attempting to somewhat make up for lost time by catching all of the earliest seasons of the show with Misty. I may even invest in games, eventually.

Got yellow for christmas waaaay back when, still have it and the yellow GB color stashed in my drawer. I stopped watching the anime a long time ago but played the game until Black and White, thought about getting X or Y when I was at gamestop getting a 3DS the other day but I opted for Animal Crossing instead (Fire Emblem was weighed in there as well). Oh! I still have the poke'dex with the original 151, and. . . . it still works.

I know that feeling myself all too well, since I was in almost the same situation as you were back in the time, although I quit pokémon altogether with anime when I grew old ) :

Started with Pokemon Red back when it was a fad... but I didn't really get into the games until the fad died down and the anime started to suck with Ash constantly being a n00b. The games are solid, getting better and better with each generation, which is why Pokemon is still one of my most favorite game series out there.

Ironicly though, my opinion of the older gen games are not really favorable and are not tinted with nostalgia unlike most other fans of the series who started out during the first two generations:
RGBY - Love-Hate leaning heavy towards hate. So glad I didn't realized that back when I played it as a kid just because it was fad.
GSC - HATE! Didn't like the region and really didn't like most of the Gen 2 Pokemon (save Crobat), even today. The regions looks quite beautiful in the remakes though.
RSE - My favorite game, my favorite region, my favorite soundtrack (sounds so adventurous), and I really like the Gen 3 Pokemon too. But the games don't age well as time moves on and improvement are made.
DPPt - My 2nd favorite region, my 2nd favorite soundtrack (dat piano), and I really like the Pokemon of this gen as well. The gameplay changes really shook things up but for the better. The champion is overated but few trainers (save Red) are at her level.
BW - Ignored due to the lack of old favorites which tainted my opinion of the Gen 5 Pokemon...
B2W2 - ...but that changed when I could see how well they fought side-to-side the the older ones. One of the most fun games I have ever played and had some of the best gameplay changes in the series.
XY - Reluctantly holding off for now... Too used to getting info from the Japanese release to help me prepare, but I can't do that world release now.

Yes, people born in the late 90's still exist in this day in age. I am one of many of a proud race of human beings called the hipsters, who lived during a golden prosperous time called "the good ol' days." Okay I'm not a hipster, but it still sounded epic, did it not?

I know that may be hard for some of you to believe but I have no reason to lie. I was born in 94.

I've been playing Pokemon ever since Blue came out. I have the games from every generation. I even bought have Pokemon X.
The anime though...I remember watching the very first episode on a Saturday morning! I stopped watching it after Misty left the group during the Hoenn region.

Has anyone watched the Pokemon Origins anime?

Pokemon Origins was awesome! The little throwbacks to the games were hilarious, and the realistic battles were so much more engaging than the anime (I still love the anime though!)

Haha, It's been a long ride huh. I've been waiting for them to do something that'll drag me back to the games, while I do love the series the DS instalments threw me off.

I was first exposed to pokemon reading an article in a chemistry magazine (I think? I was pretty young at the time) about a certain incident that had taken place in Japan wherein an episode of a children's TV show caused mass seizures across the country. I remember the show's name was an amalgamation of the words poké, Japanese for pocket, and mon, Japanese for monsters (the irony that these were actually transplanted English words was lost at the time). I didn't remember all that until years later though, nor would I remember one of several fun weird games I'd later play at a friend's house, that one computer game where the text was all messed up (i.e. in Japanese) so you had to guess at what menu items went where, and if you guessed wrong (e.g. team instead of item) at the wrong time you'd have to start over since there was no button to back out of the menu, only space bar. Yes, space bar. I didn't actually get into Pokemon (or recognize it as such, I might've been a little slow) until one of the neighbor kids showed me pokemon cards and how to get ripped off, which I promptly then utilized to attempt to rip other kids off. I never got the much-coveted "holographic" Charizard, but my dad was kind enough to stand in line with me for three hours at a mall event so I could get Mew added to my team. I'm not sure how he stood it. Said Mew is now gone to the land of missing electrons, most likely due to duels with my friend's team of Missingno., shortly after which a number of unusual effects such as walking through walls appeared in my game (which was actually pretty cool). I also plugged 300 hours into Silver, but haven't touched any of the newer ones.
