Introducing someone to anime
Posted 2/14/14
Basically my friend is a real rich snob. Although I love her boatloads! I tried telling her about the great invention know as anime and I think I scared her off.

"THERE ARE CHICKS WITH BIG TITS, SHORT SKIRTS, GREAT PLOTS, OLD PEOPLE THAT LOOK YOUNG, PEDOPHILES THAT ARE HOT AND ADVENTURES THAT ALMOST GET THE CHARACTERS KILLED. SHIT LIKE THAT, IT'S AWESOME TRUST MEH!"

After my 5 minute rambling she blankly stared at me.

"They're good pedophiles though..."

She still wasn't convinced so at our sleep over I showed her something girly she would like (Maid-Sama) and we ended up watching Ouran which she loved! She even tries pulling the weird bromance the Hitachiins have with me. Or she would let me sit on her shoulders like Mitsukini. So I'm extremely grateful for introducing her to anime which we both bond on.

Love you Katie.

I've had limited success using AMVs. No real converts to speak of but interest is usually pigued, especially if they're into the music choice.

I firmly believe that you'd have to pretty much have zero creative imagination, and also be a REALLY boring person for there to not even be ONE anime out there that you'd like.

I think there is literally something for everybody, there are just those who don't even bother to look. The people that I know who have actually attempted to watch anime have all liked it at least a little bit. I think most people who hate anime or have no interest are usually people who haven't given any real effort into watching anything or finding something that they might like, which is probably how it should be anyway.

I think this might pertain to how restrictive someone see's themselves as. You can imagine it being anime to begin with is already drawing a foreign interest as a first boundary that might gate them from peeking intro. Second is the general nature i'm sure they'd imagine the community they'd be walking into (or something along those lines I'm not sure if I can put it into words yet) that would lead to where I'm to believe really sets the yes or no i'd see in a person who would watch it. If they've really hardened themselves on who they are in the millions of variables that brings to the table would really define whether I'd feel comfortable to begin with asking them to watch any of these shows. I guess to TL;DR
they would have to show some previous interest or..some specific action that'd give me a sign of how open minded they are as this isn't something generally talked about. To me at least.

One of my good friends would make fun of anime saying it was weird and doesn't make sense at all so he would never watch it. Then I remembered he was a big DBZ fan and pointed out that DBZ was an anime. He was in such shock and disbelief. He couldn't believe his beloved DBZ was one of those weird no sense making animes. Even after that revelation he said that it was an exception because he thought it was an American cartoon growing up. He continued to look down on anime saying he didn't understand why people watched it including myself. Well after he said that I tried to remember all the "American cartoons" he had watched. I revealed all of them to be animes and so after that he slowly started to admit defeat. Now he has gone through most of the popular shounens I recommended to him and so far he has liked all of them. Although he acts like he was never against watching it to begin with which pisses my girlfriend and I off but at least I got him to change his mind about it. Another friend I got to start watching anime originally thought anime was the same thing as hentai lol. I don't remember her story exactly but some guy wanted to show her a hentai with tentacles(my I wonder which one) and pretty much scarred her from ever attempting to give anime a try for the next 6 years. Our initial conersation about anime went something like, "Hey why do you watch that weird stuff with your girlfriend? Doesn't it gross you out?" I answered with "What? Why would it be gross? I watch it with my little brother too." She then flipped and asked me what was wrong with me. At that point I was a little confused so I proceeded to ask her what she meant. Eventually I sorted things out with her and she gave anime a try so now she loves it.

I forgot to mention I have a cousin who used to watch Naruto on Toonami but because of unknown circumstances he now doesn't like it. Whenever I get on Crunchyroll on my xbox instead of playing COD or L4D with him he says "Oh my god dude, why do you and your girlfriend like to watch ching chong chinese sh**." Now everytime I or someone else in the party starts to watch anime he says something along those lines. I'm not even joking. My girlfriend gets really angry when he refers to it that way because she says it is a really disrespectful way to name it. It was the only anime he ever watched and he didn't even get too far into it.

An old friend of mine introduced me to anime with Vampire Princess Miyu when I was 11. After that I watched Fruits Basket, and loved it! I got completely hooked onto anime and still am.

But after I started buying my own DVDs/Manga and stopped borrowing them from her, that person got really angry at me, shouting "Anime is my thing! You don't even like it properly! You just stole it from me!"... We sorta stopped speaking after that...

I think it's great to introduce people to anime, and I love talking to people who've just gotten into one or two series as much as I love talking to people who've been fans for years. It's nice to have lots of different viewpoints on things.

I recommended Durarara!! to a friend who never watched anime. But:

Unfortunately I didn't know many animes back then and I couldn't think of any better title to recommend. Maybe I'll show her Golden Time some day...

I got my friend hooked on Attack on Titan! I think that's probably the best anime to get people interested. The story is just super captivating.
I don't think it made him an anime fan but I was just happy to have someone to talk to about AoT haha. It was interesting to hear his point of view on the anime since he didn't have any other anime to compare it to.

I got two of my friends who never really made fun of it but certainly had not interest in anime, well I got them to start watching AOT, they were watching it every week and we would always discuss it!! And one of them got soooo into it she started reading the manga (which I also introduced her to) I think I might even talk her into going to AX with me this summer;) The more the merrier

I got someone into anime by first like most people did - just observe what they like from shows. Of course one of the easiest gateway anime's for someone to watch is Attack on Titan. He liked it. Then I showed him Sword Art Online... he is now currently an anime fan.

I'm showing him Aldnoah.Zero and later maybe Death Note.
