There are very few people who hate on an anime because it's NON-mainstream. I think non-mainstream anime only get hated on for their flaws, which is a good thing.

IMO think people hate the"Mainstream Anime" more than the new regular one or two season animes. That being said if an anime is bad it get what it deserves!

But look at Kill La Kill very popular but some people dont like it because of the insanity, violence fanservice etc. Not because its mainstream or not!

My last thought on this is I follow my favorite animes on the forum and really dont see what the author is trying to say. There is a lot of good anime fans out there whose views and genres can agree or be far apart. But I rarely see mainstream fans hatinng on smaller releases.

Its a bit more common than you might think, but the attitude is usually from casual anime viewers (that don't really show up too often on forums) that relate a series popularity with its quality. I had a small group of friends that were like that when I was in high school and getting them to read or watch any series (not just anime) that weren't insanely popular was a headache. I consider it more of an attitude that is around but the majority of the community doesn't have to deal with it due to casual fans generally not voicing opinions where the community can hear them.

I just read this whole thread and up until the end of page 3 it was just why people hate the 'mainstream' anime not the fans of those anime being elitists.

I guess I'm fortunate enough that all my anime-watching friends are equally into both the mainstream stuff and non-mainstream stuff.

I see this attitude a lot though, particularly with music. My response to people who trash on the non-mainstream stuff is shut up and open your mind a bit. There's so much amazing content out there (be it anime, music, whatever) that you're really missing out if you just stick to the big name stuff.

Everybody has an inner hipster, and as much as it's fun to bash people who shun the popular simply because it's popular, those people rarely see themselves that way. They see themselves as lamenting the popularity of the mediocre while so much good stuff goes unappreciated. On the flip side there is always a subset somewhere that sees you as the "normal" one that doesn't understand what is wrong with your choice in cars, food, music, etc. Instead of being derisive toward those with a deeper interest in something, people should view them as great sources of information. Instead of being dismissive of people with a casual interest in something, the fans should see them as potential converts and not mock their initial choices. Either way it is about being open and tolerant, and really, how often will you go wrong with that.

Is this thread really necessary? Doesn't mainstream anime get enough bashing already? Hell, I'm afraid to say that I liked SAO it certain communities for fear of verbal assault. That verbal assault is usually directed at me from the hardcore 'Otaku' who indiscriminately hate anything popular, as if they are in a contest to see who has watched the most obscure anime possible.

Now, I'm not saying that the 'Mainstream' fans are any better, those who hold their favorite anime high on a pedestal, and cursing any others that may enter their domain. They act like their fans of anime, when it's more accurate to say they are fans of that particular anime. E.g. they like One Piece, not because it's an anime, but because it's One Piece. You see what I'm saying?

Pretty much there are jerks on both sides, all trying to say that there way of thinking is the correct way of thinking. It's, on a lesser scale, just like politics or religion, and people tend to hold their ground and are nearly willing to go to all out war for their ideals. Me, I'm more of the 'watch-anything-that-comes-my-way' kind of fan.

Also, 'Otaku' have their own list of 'mainstream' titles they can't shut-up about.....

Mainstream Otaku Titles: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Azumanga Daioh, Nichijou, Now and Then, Here or There, Clannad

To those who like those series, and compare everything to them......

Apocalypse Zero....... that is all.........

I'm just going to watch whatever strikes my fancy, regardless of whether or not they're "mainstream." I like various anime for various reasons, like watching Naruto and Bleach for action and colorful characters, and Ergo Proxy and Fate/Zero for the more psychological and tear-jerking elements. I happen to consider myself a "casual" anime/manga fan.

Also, I've been under the impression that the harem/ecchi genre and anime are very "mainstream," since they're found all over the place. I find it much more common to come across those than anything else when shopping for anime. Everything is subjective.

I agree with the above! I pretty much watch whatever catches my eye, whether mainstream or not, and both categories have really good stuff.
And this may come as a big shocker, but I find that most of the "mainstream" series (those that have stood the test of time anyway) deserve the popularity they get (and even those that don't deserve it have reasons that you can figure out), no matter how much elitists hate them. Every single series has its flaws, because it is next to impossible to be perfect in every area.

Also, it is kind of hard to hate on series that are not well-known in the first place. I have yet to come across someone bash a series because it isn't popular enough.

Defining "mainstream"....American point of view

Anime was shown on ADULT SWIM/TOONAMI, then mainstream

Anime was NOT on adult swim/toonami then it is NOT mainstream

easy peasy
