A few weeks ago I got into the game of Go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_(game)
So I'm wondering if anyone here plays the game

On a side note I'm Serak on the IGS if anyone cares to play.

I used to play it quite a bit, even IRL with some people in a Go club many years back. However, I eventually ended up giving up on it. Playing online is usually not very fun to me, especially in the high Kyu rankings because people often get pissed off if they're losing and just leave the game in the middle of it without either resigning or allowing the game to finish on its own. That can be very frustrating when it happens to you multiple times.

I've always preferred playing in-person with a group of people, but that group died off and there's just not many around my area that even know of Go. The other issue I had was that a 1 Dan player gave me a 4 stone handicap once and, when I beat him by a huge margin, he got incredibly pissed off and refused to play with me again. That kind of made me a bit hesitant because I always played for fun and don't want to be around people that are going to act like children when they lose.

With all that being said, I would play again if I had some regular, decent people to play with (either online or off) but I've probably forgotten most of what I learned at this point so odds are I'm going to be 20 - 25 Kyu in strength at the tops, which is barely anything.

It's a fun and very challenging game. Unfortunately, it just hasn't really taken off in most of America and I've found it very difficult to find anyone that plays, let alone anyone that actually knows what the game is IRL.

Go is pretty alive in the U.S. Here's a listing of some of the clubs there are: https://www.usgo.org/chapters

I live in a somewhat Isolated part of Texas, so there are no IRL Go clubs near my place.

There are also some online Go clubs that basically ensure that you have regular people to play with: senseis.xmp.net/OnlineGoClubs
The Kido Go club is really interesting: senseis.xmp.net/?PlayingGoInSecondLife

I've had a really good experience on the IGS in general, the only problem I've had is sandbagging, where really high ranking players pretend to be a lower rank than they are to beat up on weaker players. I haven't encountered that much though.

What I do get a lot is players who resign when they know a game is completely out of their favor. But most of the time, those players immediately rechallange me and frequenly beat me the second time around. There tends to be a general air of "every game lost is a lesson learned."

I should also mention that I am something of beginner and don't have much experience with kyu ranks above 14.

[edit] For some reason the Crunchyroll links add an extra '=' to the Sensei's library URLs. Just delete the equals sign and they should work.

I play, I'm about 5kyu, I play on gokgs though, the name's Focus I still love the game though I don't play it nearly as much as I used to! I'm glad you found Go though, it's always exciting to get new players to try it out. And if they end up loving it and sticking with it, all the better. Good luck with your games and always remember to have fun!

Nope, that's why I linked to the wikipedia description of the game so people wouldn't get confused.

I'd like to play sometime. Do you have an account in either the IGS or KGS?

Yes, actually

I was really into it for half a year

However, I couldn't find anyone to play with....

Mind you this was before I found the wonders of the internet

Of course that was 2 or 3 years ago

Thus, I can't remember how to play to save my life

Might get back into it if I get some free time away from school and my other hobbies
