I've heard from my friend the internet that Gurren Lagann is a "Legendary" anime. Of course I had just watched it and liked it but it didn't feel "Legendary". A show like FLCL (Fooly Cooly), that truly screams legendary to me. Is it a test of time? or something else that makes a show "Legendary". what are the factors?

Pioneering or a perfect/near perfect current anime. Here are some examples

pioneering legendary -Hokuto No Ken, Dragonball Z, Miyazaki Movies

perfect/near perfect current anime-Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Fate Zero

The above is all based on my opinion of course .

^Yup.

Legendary is a pretty strong word. I wonder if you mean anything different than what some people would call "classic."

Some shows just have an "it" factor. Usually it is a certain measure of internal unity that just holds the whole thing together and a certain level of artistic excellence that translates the message effectively. Not a lot of shows have this, the inexplicable "thing" that tells you, "this is really good."

PMMM has it. FLCL, in my opinion, does not.

I think Psycho Pass is pretty legendary. Chihayafuru is, in my opinion, legendary (not all "legendary" shows have to be action).

Sword Art Online is legendary if not for its infamy, so is Guilty Crown.

School Days is pretty legendarily terrible.

What kind of legendary we talkin' here.

Legendary stuff is remarkable and well - known.
Everybody knows Pokemon - Legend.
I've heard of school days, I don't plan on watching it. Legend to some.
DBZ - you know?

For me, there are 2 categories of legendary:

1) Pioneering: The are shows that for a large part pioneered a genre, like DBZ, but don't really have the quality to stand the test of time.

2) Quality: Then this second category includes those shows that do stand the test of time with top notch plot, characters and themes. This includes shows like FMA, One Piece & Cowboy Bebop. The first 2 for plot, and the second for audio & visual effect.

Shows with memorable characters, have an emotional impact or are just well known for being stand-out, quality shows.

Wait.....PMMM? What in the.... I'm partially lost.

the term "Legendary" is probably stronger with some than others. I don't use the words "Legendary" and "Masterpiece" the same way. I would put anime like Gurren Lagann and Fate/Zero both into the term "Legendary"
While saving "Masterpiece" for anime like Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Berserk.

Now at base value, it seems rather obvious how I differentiate no? The more serious anime tend to be Masterpieces, and the more light hearted Legendary. That works fine with me.

Legendary is something you would call really damn good, but admit their are plenty of flaws. Gurren Lagann and FLCL have tons of silly little flaws, they don't stop your enjoyment of the show, but they tend to favor Execution over Perfection.

Think about the Legendary Code Geass. Does it make sense for our Main character to challenge a Knight to 1v1 combat? Especially when our hero SUCKS ASS at piloting Giant robots?
It does when YOU WANT HIM TO SURF ON A RIOT SHIELD

This move clearly says Awesome > Practicality and Story Telling

To elaborate on Masterpieces, I grade them on a Story standpoint. Do they convey the characters well? How are you driven to watch this show? What's the Message/Theme/Lesson/Idea behind the show itself? Shows like Katanagatari are what I believe to be Masterpieces. Something that has a set message it wants to convey, and regardless of execution manages to tell that message.

As they all say, it's Subjective. I find Legendary a show judged on it's execution, while Masterpiece one judged on it's ideals.
A Legendary Masterpiece manages to get both of these right. FLCL is one I'll put there.

Love it or hate it no one can deny that Evangelion and PMMM are already legendary status. There's just no other anime out there that can even match these 2 shows enormous success. The total amount of revenue from these 2 series alone dwarfs most shows out there.

For the record I don't like Evangelion... well not that I hate it but let's just say I watched about half of it back in the days when anime was still hard to find and now that anime is easy to find I just don't have the motivation to finish it. Didn't really appeal to me.
