I guess for me legendary would refer to those anime that have huge staying power and have had a huge influence on anime in their genre. Captain Harlock,Dragonball,Ghost In The Shell, Evangelion (Even though it ripped off a ton of 70's sci fi anime it still influenced future direction a lot) To some extent One Piece due to it's staying power and how huge it's become around the world much like Dragonball did previously breaking out of Japan and East Asia.

Those kinds of anime are legendary to me the kind if you asked people to name an anime and they are not huge anime fans they'd likely name one of those. They have had influences on pop culture and several anime that came out since.

On FLCL no it's not legendary even if it's influential it's not one that is widely well known. FLCL gets love because it was something that is a record of the era it came out. It's full of pop culture references and nods to Japanese life at that time and it told a story about growing up that was crazy and fun and everything that life is all about. Has a ton of memorable quotes and influenced several anime since and not just Gainax ones. I think there are a lot of shows we wouldn't have now if it wasn't for Gainax once again being a pathfinder when they made FLCL.

Love it or hate it no one can deny that Evangelion and PMMM are already legendary status. There's just no other anime out there that can even match these 2 shows enormous success. The total amount of revenue from these 2 series alone dwarfs most shows out there.

For the record I don't like Evangelion... well not that I hate it but let's just say I watched about half of it back in the days when anime was still hard to find and now that anime is easy to find I just don't have the motivation to finish it. Didn't really appeal to me.

I keep wondering WHAT IS PMMM?
Then I googled and like, it's almost obvious now but, WHY ARE WE NOT JUST CALLING IT MADOKA MAGICA? IS IT THAT HARD? DO YOU PEOPLE GET OFF ON MAKING THESE SHORT HANDS THAT I DON'T KNOW ABOUT?

I've got a bit of a question for you, how long ago did you watch Evangelion? While I don't mind people not liking something, I do tend to question what they thought of things, so what did you think of Evangelion?

Another question, what do you think of Madoka Magica as a story? While I've heard complains of the set-piece characters and over-dramatic turn of some events, I find the story itself to be quite masterful. But i don't think the show has reached as far as "legendary' as of yet. It's a 12 episode niche deconstruction anime, it's doesn't have as wide a fan base as one might suspect.

Well PMMM is shorter than Madoka Magica and between MSMM and PMMM, PMMM is more commonly used to refer to Madoka Magica.

Veeeery long ago when cds were still a thing and people are mostly on 3-5 KBp/s dial ups and 50 MB hard disks. It was quite hard to find anime back then so that's one of the primary reasons I never finished Evangelion but like I said even now where it's easy to watch Eva completely I still don't have the motivation to finish it simply because it really didn't hook me back then. Evangelion did things that you really didn't expect from a giant robot show. I still remember the first time Shinji piloted Eva-01 it was a crazy fight... then also that part where he completely berserked out and ate the angel. Mostly didn't like the episodic monster of the week format it followed for a while.

As for PMMM... I rank it as my number 1 anime. It's story while short and not complex is really compelling and well structured. I simply rank PMMM as legendary because of it's vast commercial success. It's nowhere near as Evangelion(the commercial success of Evangelion is on a whole different level and should never be compared to other anime lol) but still extremely successful to the point it dwarfs major hits. Also it's true that outside Japan PMMM doesn't have a very wide fan base but in Japan it's extremely popular. It's almost like Evangelion really even their grandmas and grandpas watch PMMM.

edit: Oh I remember the biggest reason why I don't have the motivation to finish Eva. I watched it's first few movies... namely The End of Evangelion... yeah... after that I was... what?

Yes and no. I don't think anyone would say Akira is not legendary.

that is how is ee it... legends are tales that have gone down for generations and have influenced countless stories... that is what make something legendary. IT doesn't even have to be all that good..

DBZ, Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, etc... i see those as legendary, many people who gets into anime hears about these shows and kinda understands them without having to watch them

A show is legendary when enough people think it is legendary. Sorry, but that really is the answer. If any of us could say for sure what would make a show that popular, we would be making anime. Once it achieves a certain level of popularity people will buy into the hype. People will think it is good because they expected it to be good. It is impossible to say why some shows are revered and others of similar quality are ignored, because people are just too unpredictable.

A show is legendary when it is popular and continues to be popular for 5-7 + years. This is my own personal opionion, it really is a subjective concept.

The term legendary changes person to person as they view anime differently

I may say Clannad is legendary where as someone who dislikes slice of life anime may hate it. This is why there are so many flame wars about anime when you talk about what is a classic or good.

I think the formula for becoming a legendary anime is pretty easy to understand, and while it's somewhat subjective, it's not as subjective as some people think. The formula, I believe is:

1. A flawless story that makes total sense from the very first episode to the very last episode with no holes.
2. An engaging story that either grips you with suspense, excitement or emotion throughout the series.
3. At least 3-4 "defining moments" that will be remembered forever. (I.E. The final battle in Akira, or SPOILER the death of Kamina)
4. One or two endearing characters to drive the anime. Your Monkey D. Luffys, your Gokus, your Spike Spiegels.
5. Lastly, the anime has to be timely for its generation, but must simultaneously speak to future generations. A timeless message.

Once you have all of those elements, the thing that makes it legendary afterwards is simply time.

An anime like FLCL when first seen, might be called legendary and many people called it that when it first came out. But, over time, it didn't have all the requirements, so now when you say it's "legendary" some people are like "huh? No it's not."

But, when you have all of those elements in place, you can still say years later "This anime is legendary" and no one will disagree.

I can say "Akira" is a legendary anime. Or "Princess Mononoke" is a legendary anime.

And 99 percent of people are going to agree, because it has all of the requirements and stood the test of time.

And I thought I was the only one.

Well, to answer the forum, I don't know. But, to me, Akagi is pretty legendary.

I would have to say the Dragon Ball series are the most "legendary" anime that I can think of off the top of my head.

It seems to be the obvious choice because everyone and anyone who has ever watched anime has heard of or watched the series.
I think a series is legendary when you know the main characters names without ever watching the series and I know many people who could do that for the Dragon Ball saga.

I think Psycho Pass is pretty legendary. Chihayafuru is, in my opinion, legendary (not all "legendary" shows have to be action).

Sword Art Online is legendary if not for its infamy, so is Guilty Crown.

School Days is pretty legendarily terrible.

What kind of legendary we talkin' here.

Ohh Zipzo we all know u enjoyed school days
