Yes, I seriously thought Pupa was going to be the anime equivalent of Saya no Uta. Much despair.

It should be noted that 'Yes' this includes After Story as well. It holds a special place in my heart, and was especially surprising because I put off watching it about 5 times because the cover art kept making me think 'eeh I don't know if I wanna' but then I put the show on, sat on my hands and told myself 'no not watching the episode'. Surprisingly (and pathetically) enough, Tomoya's character design kept me sticking around, and as shallow as the whole thing sounds, I enjoyed it loads. It's also why I always get annoyed at people now when they say 'recommend me so and so in this genre, but it can't have old animation that looks bad, or ugly people' because if you judge the book by its cover, you just might miss out on something truly special. Did Clannad have old or bad animation? No, but old animation is usually the reason that crops up as to why someone won't watch something looks-wise. Clannad showed me that judging a show by its artistic style can be one of the biggest mistakes you can make, and I loved it so much I'd probably say it's my favourite of all time. Of course there are those who think it's a big fat turd, but I'm glad it exists.

^This. Most definitely. I found Madoka under suggestions for Shugo Chara, so my expectations were completely blown.

^This (to a point). Although I have to admit, the derpy titans didn't stick out to me too much until I saw comments pointing them out.

I know a lot of people like to lump Hunter x Hunter in with all of the other big shounen series but I think it's done a consistently good job of subverting what our expectations of that genre tend to be. It gets very dark and gruesome at times even though the setup of it all seems innocent enough, and most of the fights aren't actually won/lost through brute strength and getting really mad. They feel more like a chess match most of the time, which is a breath of fresh air. Basically a bad temper and a lot of willpower aren't enough to let the heroes auto-win every fight.

^And this. Completely agree. I thought it was just going to be a simple adventure series, but it surprised me. And yeah, I agree that it isn't like a lot of other shounen out there. Heck, part of me doesn't even want to classify it as "shounen" because I feel that classification almost undermines it in a way...

But there was so much melodramatic posturing.

I know I'm in the minority but it was really difficult for me to take seriously for any length of time. It kept losing me.

It felt like the show was just acting serious while most of the time it was just... not.

Well to each his/her own. Another thing I noticed about your post is that Garden of Sinners must be really awesome, I gotta start that.
