I decided to make this because every time someone mentions "School Days", they seem to have no idea what they're talking about. And because I'm bored.

Let me start off by explaining exactly what School Days is. It was a visual novel released in 2005, a manga series in 2006, and an anime in 2007. What's a visual novel? Fine, I'll start at the very beginning.

A visual novel is a combination of a book, an anime (especially in this particular case), and a text-based video game.
There are many visual novels that integrate pornography into their script. And by pornography, I mean sex scenes. The difference being that a sex scene is actually somewhat important to the plot and character development. It isn't just included for fun. That's bordering on what people call "hentai games". You read the text on the screen, complete with images, characters, music, and usually voices. Every so often, a branch in the dialogue will happen and you will be given 2 or more options to change the conversations, or actions you take. As we all know, in real life the actions you take have a direct impact on your life. Things you say make people react.

School Days was unique in that the majority of the scenes were not still images. It was animated, with full movement and voice. Many of the scenes from the anime can be recognized as being taken almost 100% directly from scenes in the game.

Many visual novels are not only rated for their sexual content, but the subject content itself. Take all the sex out of Fate/stay night, or Kanon, and you have a story perfectly suitable for young teens. Which is what they did. Take all the hentai scenes out of School Days, and what you're left with is an absolutely desperate tale of extreme jealousy, mental instability, and murder (suicide in certain endings of the story). There are many, many endings to the School Days visual novel, and not a single one of them is entirely happy. I spent many fruitless hours playing through the story time and time again, trying to find one.

Most of the viewers of School Days knew what they were getting into. In fact, you had to have a copy of the game (Either School Days or Summer Days) physically in your hand in order to watch the last episode in Japan, or else they denied you entry into the theater.

Many visual novels have Bad Endings, but not like this. Stop judging the anime based on what every other high school harem romance anime has told you your standards should be. Comparing any other slice-of-life romance story with School Days is pure idiocy, and you look stupid. Every time.

That is well and good for the Japanese audience, however, the same details and the limitation of how to see the last episode do not exist for those of us outside of Japan. Which is pretty much everyone on this site that has seen it (and probably most people you know as well.) Also, it has less to do with people comparing it to other series then for the fact that the characters are all completely unlikable ass holes in one way or another. :/

Many people are either close-minded, lack insight or just plain dumb. No point in getting frustrated with them.

There's a massive difference between perspectives. As the visual novel was never localized, almost all viewers are walking into something they know nothing about.

On crunchyroll the tags listed are visual novel, drama, harem, romance.
This is repeated on wikipedia with little reference toward the nature of the drama or visual novel components that made their way into the anime.

A typical harem anime is likely to have nonsensical humor and have "ecchi" listed under the tags if there are lewd occurrences.

To blame overseas viewers for not having a background in something (that doesn't exist in english under standard means) prior to watching it is rather presumptuous. A viewer of the anime on Crunchyroll is likely to be rather brash and rely heavily on Crunchyroll's description of the plot and the tags there-in. You mention it being senseless to compare School Days to other harem or visual novel-based anime. Well, unfortunately, without first engaging with School Days via some medium, how could they possibly know?

Heavily researching every title ahead of time is rather senseless since the tags and description should be valid in telling the viewer what to expect. Watching a free anime that's categorically listed under a genre one enjoys and then being upset over the content is highly reasonable in that respect.

"You need a background in the content that you can't reasonably (or for many people "legally") view," is expecting too much..

Ummm I'm sure it has a lot of other "good" endings as well. I know there's the harem ending where somehow he gets both Sekai and Kotonaha pregnant and strangely they both agree to get together in the end. There is a total of 21 endings. 15 of them are "good" ones.

Considering that most anime fans don't have any idea what "Bad" and "Good" anime is and simply cannot comprehend hating or disliking anything anime, they automatically default to "School Days" as an anime they don't like

But to all you School Day's haters out there:

There is a difference between a bad anime and an anime that makes you feel bad

Hi folks! It's always a good idea when starting a topic about a specific anime to see if a discussion thread for it already exists, and if so, to add your thoughts to that existing thread. There is a discussion thread for School Days, and this rant and subsequent discussion would be a good addition to that discussion. Please share there:
