I usually spend 2-3 dollars per episode or less. If the series was really good, I could justify 4-5 dollars per episode. I would spend more than that, but I have too many shows saved on Rightsuf that are 1-2 dollars per episode, and usually prefer to buy five series instead of one. I will buy Sword Art Online someday, even at the 160 dollar retail price. I would love to have Black Rock Shooter, but am not going to pay almost $400 for nine episodes and some silly little plastic figures.

Years ago, I would fork out about $50 bucks a week to my local anime rental spot to binge on like 15 DVD's over the course of a week. But, I would never pay for anything these days. It's just insane to pay $60 for an anime that if you wait for it, will appear on any one of the myriad sites like CR, ANN, Hulu, Netflix, Funimation, etc...

Heck, I don't even pirate like I used to, anymore. There's just no point. Let the sponsors pay out the pocket to the studios. I'm fine with giving 30 seconds of my time to watch an ad over shelling out a fortune to own something I'll only watch once.

I actually would spend a lot and have spent a lot on anime. The most i have ever spent at once is about $200. I got like 2 box sets and completed a series i had been keeping up with the releases. But due to the times I cannot afford to purchase as much anime now and probably only would spend money on a great deal which is around $40-$50.

Probably $100, though most I've spend was around $80 I think.

I feel guilty if I spend over $50. I'd rather spend it on cosplay. xDD

With everyone saying how unwilling they are to spend much on anime it made me feel guilty and bummed out for buying a whole bunch of anime. but then again I only started buying because my internet connection was canceled for a long time. Now that I have connection I look at my financial state and the stack of dvds&manga, I cannt help but give a nervous laugh. but then I read this:

I know I already posted but I feel like saying...

Having read here, and in some other places about the same thing, I think what a lot of people forget when saying things from Japan, like the Anime, are too expensive is not just turning Yen into Dollars but also shipping costs. A lot of people want to pay what they pay for a Blu-Ray/DvD from their local store, and some costs I have seen are just for a movie, not a series. Go to your stores look at TV series, they tend to cost anywhere from $10-$30 more than just one movie.

So add in the fact you are getting a TV series from another country, whose pricing is different than our, changing the money from one currency to another then also adding in shipping costs (not just the flight/boat ride over but also don't forget usually there is multiple shippings as such as going across the US to your town and then more shipping of once in your town getting to your house).

So when you're talking about probably $40-$60 for a series, probably $30-40 shipping, plus exchange rates between Yen and Dollar... around $70 to $100 per series isn't really asking all that much. Obviously this is for regular shipped series, collectors editions just like collectors edition games or series here in US cost roughly double the regular.

Sorry just had to rant today.

And now I feel better
Hurray me for supporting the anime industry!!

As in, overall in your lifetime at current expenses, or on individual merchandise? The most I've spent on a boxset was $80 and it was Cowboy Bebop. In overall expenses, a little over $1,000.

Going by what Stonewolfe said, you have to take shipping costs into account. For instance, I decided since I loved Time of Eve so much to import it from Japan. It would have been $30 for the full Blu-Ray. Well, tack on an extra $40 for shipping and it's now $70. That was the remastered web-series and now the movie version is going to be released with a dub for $50 overseas because of that kickstarter and frankly, I think it works best as a movie, so if I'd known about it sooner I would have shelled out $50 for a secured copy, especially considering it is going to come with an English dub, but alas... I'm still going to get it though

Another show I'd like to get is Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, I want the Blu-Rays, but they're around $40-$60 a piece and there are six released out of seven so far. Also, my local store is technically Best Buy and their prices are bullshit expensive, so....

I think you should on spend money on something you really know without a doubt that you want, especially merchandise such as television shows and movies. Also take into account if you're going to rewatch it from time to time instead of letting it collect dust. I rewatch everything I buy and most of the shows I enjoy aren't streaming as they're too old or their licenses have expired or something or other, which in that case it's fine by me.

As for Madoka Magica. I have the entire series, but at the time of purchase I was debating whether to shell out $120 for the entire series on Blu-Ray or to just get the cheaper DVD version. During that time, we (my family) had just gotten a new Blu-Ray player and you can guess what sealed my decision. The limited edition was out of the question though, there was no doubt or hesitation there. I'm not buying the cash-cow movies.

I've spent up to $120 for a full series, but that's assuming a quality show, hefty episode count and exclusive content/goodies. I have to feel like I'm getting a lot of bang for my buck.

I'll be honest. I spend more money on Madoka Magica figures than I ever will on the anime itself.

I'm not made of money or nothing, but I've spent just short a thousand on Figures alone.

Then we got the animes themselves, which are sometimes harder to obtain. About 2 thousand worth.

Then we have my Sword collection at rather low seven hundred.

I have to start finding better uses for my money.
