Alright! so me and a friend were discussing the rights and privileges of forum moderators,we decided to think of pros and cons. A couple things came up that i thought was good brain food and so i wanted to hear others opinion.
Please leave a pro or a con about forum moderators :>

Pro: they keep spam to a minimum.

Con: having too many rules, and being too strict.

Pro: ...

Con: if a moderator gives his/her opinion on a thread many will take up the side supporting the moderator solely based on his/her position.

Pro: ...

Con: power hungry...its not fun going up against a mod who loves banning people.

Pro: ...

Con: attitude problems, we encounter saucy attitudes all the time but coming from a mod, its like you cant say anything back for fear that they will punish you in some manner as though they were your parents.

Pro: ...

Con: the air of superiority, this one bugs me, a lot, i mean just because you are on this site 24/7 does not mean that you are superior to anyone less then a moderator.

OK! so now leave some pros and cons about forum mods, Try and leave more pros, as you can see im not very good at thinking about them :> Thanks!

If you think mods have attitude problems, imagine how they must feel when they wander into one of your threads and try to read the nonsensical mess that you're posting.

Try structuring your thoughts in a format that doesn't make people reading it want to gouge their eyes out.

It seems to me that most of the cons you have listed are an issue on the side of the regular members rather than the moderators. It isn't the moderators fault that some people choose to be idiots who follow them and their ideas based on forum rank. Same thing with fearing to talk back. It isn't the moderators who decide whether you talk back or not. If you have a valid point or even if you don't as long as you don't break the rules while talking back there isn't really an issue. In my personal opinion the supposed air of superiority is also mainly on the side of regular users. Sure there are some moderators that do exhibit that kind of thing but a lot of times as well it is the users that simply have an inferiority issue when it comes to anyone with authority and instantly feel like that person in authority is going to be that way. The part about too many rules and being too strict is easily debated on either side. The part about them being power hungry is irrelevant. Know the rules and don't break them and they can't ban you or if they do you have a way to make your case about being unbanned by those who aren't too quick to ban. I have no interest in adding things to the list on either side though.

I understood all of what he posted pretty easily. Perhaps you are just being too critical of things.

This is going to be interesting. I don't really want to put my optional pro's or con's on the matter although I do have quite a few. I think it depends on how you take them and how broad you get with pro's and con's.

Pro-They help maintain the site.

Con-Some use their power in unfavorable ways towards the public.

That was simple enough right?

Con: the air of superiority,

Some mods are good some aren't, it's like that on EVERY FORUM

Hmm well I don't know, it's whining about the mods, you really think they want a thread like this? Read the other responses....

personally prefer a modless forum, i have nothing against any mods here, i think they're doing a good job.

i don't like censorship and being so restricted in what i can say.

but anyway, i've also realized we can never achieve absolute freedom, so might as well not think about it.

Whining? Really? It is discussing pros and cons of the existence of moderators. Which, while it isn't a discussion I care about too much and would never bother to start myself, is a legitimate conversation people can have. If he was going on about some incident he had with a moderator I could see where it would be whining. However, I don't see anything like that in this case so I have to disagree that this thread is someone whining about moderators.

So tell me, you think mods want a entire thread about people talking about cons about them?
Thought not.

He should go to the mod discussion thread

It is only going to be pure cons on moderators if nobody says why they think moderators are good or necessary. Even if it is all negative thoughts people have about moderators it shouldn't make any difference to the moderators themselves. This discussion isn't about removing moderators from this site or bashing any mod in particular so it really does nothing in the end.

Also, what a moderator wants is also irrelevant if they go strictly by the rules. As long as a thread isn't breaking any of the rules then they have no cause to remove it. To remove it over any hurt feelings or anything else outside of it breaking the rules would just be unprofessional.

This is not a discussion.

You are basing your "cons" and pro's" on your experiences of random, non-professional forums.. Which you then generalize all moderators with. What?

This thread should be deleted. There's no point to it.

It could easily be a discussion on moderators but it seems that people here are too defensive of things in order for it to actually become one. Also, please do not make it seem like this list of pros and cons is my doing. I simply commented with my opinion on the list that was already posted. I also did not generalize all moderators at all or at least did not intend to do so in any of my responses to this thread. If you would point out where I did then I would be happy to fix the mistake.
