Apparently, players in SAO have the ability to buy houses and properties. What are player-owned houses in SAO used for?

I keep thinking that they function like the apartments in Grand Theft Auto V, where you can spawn in them, and they provide a place for you to chill and hang out with friends.

What do you think is the purpose of owning houses in SAO?

Doing ecchi stuff, comfy place to sleep in. Well in a lot of MMO, there are housing that serve almost no purpose execpt to decorate things anyway. Pretty sure the house is also used for cooking since Asuna mentioned having cooking equipment in her house.

Probably like a regular house, you know? keep all your stuff there. Make it look nice with furniture. :p When it showed Asuna's house it looked pretty regular to me!

Remember, SAO was created with the express intention of throwing people into the game world. Being killed is a very high possibility, and sleeping out in the open is damn reckless. I'll assume people can and do feel tired in SAO, and do have to sleep.

It serves the same function as a regular house. It protects you from monsters, players, and the weather, while being an added private-area for you and your friends. Don't knock private space, you can't exactly talk to someone expressly through texted in this game. And being trapped 24/7 in this world makes such a Hang out a luxury compared to GTA V.

Of course, GTA V has the same benefit of a good hiding place from the random murders some people dish out on you. Passive mode is for chumps.

Typical MMO usage, store junk you can't either carry or bank. Display trophies, cook, tradecraft, or meet other people at for guild/party meetings. Also with recall spells or abilities use them as quick access points if they are located near prime hunting/leveling/exploring areas. Otherwise just a place to spend time at when you don't want to do of the above in a game.

There is exhaustion in SAO, although it seems to be at a much slower pace. So it's mental exhaustion rather than physical and it seems that how much the players could endure depended on how strong their will power is at the time. At the start of SAO: Progressive Vol. 1, Asuna fought against monsters for 3 days until she reached a certain threshold where she passed out. So sleeping is needed.

Like Felstalker said, sleeping in the field is silly - monsters. Also, due to sleep PKing, as shown in Eps. 5 and 6, no knowledgeable player would sleep outside a player house or inn, where the rooms can only be accessed by other players if the owner/renter sets the permissions correctly.

But other than that, from a spawn point perspective, owning a house might have been just like that. Returning to the same familiar place after each hunting session, rather than having to rent a room each night, which is why I think Kirito bought his house. As a player who is completely fixed on leveling, it doesn't really seem like a house would serve him much purpose...

Also, most inns appear to be low quality unless player willing to spend a bunch of money each night (also in Progressive).

But Asuna used a lot of money on her house, so houses in SAO are probably the ultimate gold dump for players. Or they could purely just be a side hobby instead of fighting for your life every day. That's what housing is in most games, just an extra thing to do in game.
