You can hate or dislike any popular anime series you want to just stay away from the hardcore fan-boys and fan-girls out there.

There's a reason they call them fanboys. They're not really fans.

They still need therapy in my honest opinion.
The non-hardcore fans are cool though.

I just want to say to all the Hunter X Hunter haters out there: I can understand where you're coming from. I first watched Hunter X Hunter 2 years ago, saw the first episode and said: "Nope." And then didn't watch it again until just a few months ago. I know that at first glance, it looks like your standard shounen fare. Just another Naruto/Fairy Tail offering. But, something happens in Season 3. I don't know if the creator realized that it was just standard fare and needed to do something different, but when it gets to season 3, the anime loses its mind.

The best way I can put it, is it turns into the Puella Magi Madoka Magica of the long-running Shounen genre. It becomes dark, shockingly brutal, realistic to the point of depressing, and flat out insane. It's like an entirely different anime. The Good guys don't always win, heads are lost...ALOT of heads are lost, they almost seem to have a decapitation fetish, and the amount of times you will drop your mouth from shock and awe are numerous.

I understand the hate if you haven't made it in deep, but I really, really recommend you go in deep. And that's just the Yorknew City arc. The current Chimera Ant arc is even better. You're missing out if you don't see Neferpitou and Kite, man.

My only reservation about Hunter X Hunter is that it got a second anime, a new lease on life. There are so many shows that I wish could have gotten that chance, but that is me being jealous, not a fault of H X H.

Naruto
One Piece
Bleach

But that is because they are too long, sorry I hate shows with 200-300-400-500+ episodes. Even if they didn't have filler... too much time needed to watch is a downer for me.

Haruhi - This is more disappointment I guess rather than hate... I was led to believe that this was going to be the best thing in the world, I got more hype from this than SAO fanboys talking about SAO (please note I do not hate SAO, in fact I enjoyed it all, I hate the fans though).

Kill La Kill and its Predecessor Gurren Lagann - Hate me if you wish people, I don't care for either of these shows what so ever.

Attack on Titan - Maybe I got overhyped... maybe I was led by the delusions of others... but I found the story and characters all to be bland. I disliked every single episode and only stuck with it hoping that it would have gotten better. For me, it didn't.

Evangelion - Ok I really hate posting this one. This one seems to be as big of a religion as SAO, AoT, and Haruhi/LuckyStar combined. Now let me first say I DON'T actually HATE Evangelion... I just... can not, for the life of me, get into it, especially the artwork/animation... I don't know why but it's not just Evangelion... really anything over 10 years old is hard for me to watch... I suppose I have been spoiled by the Animation and Art of recent shows...

So there are a few anime that i was angry about watching and a few anime that got i don't hate but don't like because of the hype (which destroyed said anime for me). The ones i genuinely dislike (top 3) might not be popular but i've seen them and didn't like them, and could be popular (i don't really know what is outside of the glaringly obvious)

Moon Phase: I can't really explain why i hate it so much without the "just agh". But overall the anime seemed like is was made just to fill space and the vamp/cat/loli thing at first didn't bother me but kinda became a plea for attention that i got really annoyed by.

Dog & Scissor: I felt tricked, the first episode had me enthralled and i was expecting that mystery of life and reading to be the focal point. Instead they made a complete 180 halfway through the second episode, and then everything went downhill and some of the character behavior was so desperate to be fun that it ruined what could have been a great scene.

Dusk Maiden Amnesia: More then half of the 12/13 episode series is filler and that irritates me, plus the ending sealed it in my vault of hate.

Anime ruined for me because of fans

FMA (i haven't seen brotherhood so this is only about the original): I actually loved all that i saw but it got difficult for me to watch because the fans i knew at the time would make me irrationally angry. Nothing against the anime but when watching it i would think of those people and it wasn't worth watching if i could focus on the actually anime (i hope that makes sense)

Death note: Don't like it, the fanbase made it seem so amazing and deep and etc, and i just found it boring and to an extent contrived (which i honestly think is only because of my dislike for the over-the-top fans)

Evangelion is absolute crap, yet everyone seems to love it.

I cannot for the life of me understand why.

There are complex stories and open-ended stories, stories that are thought provoking and stories that are extremely detailed. Then there are stories that are shat out like ink-blots made of diarrhea after a taco-bell binge. It isn't complex. It isn't thought provoking. Evangelion is an explosion of shit that people try to pass off as complex and thought provoking. The truth is that the writers just don't know how to tell a good story, so everything becomes jumbled and difficult to follow.

A couple years ago there was a phase of "mind bending" fiction that became very popular. Some, like Fight Club, were very good. Others were pretentious crap. A Scanner Darkly, Donny Darko, Memento and a few others, just like Evangelion before them, were a bunch of crap told in an incoherent way in order to sound complex and mind bending, when they were really just jumbled. And I can't stand that people get pretentious about "getting" these shows. There is nothing to get.

The people who think these kinds of shows are "good" are the same kind of people who get scammed into spending thousands of dollars on "authentic" abstract art that was actually made by a toddler's finger painting.

I agree with the bolded, but Memento was actually fine for me. Try The Prestige and whatever you do, stay away from FLCL. And you may not like Inception either, even though that ones my guilty pleasure.

FLCL was guilty of being a disjointed mess, but it was fun. It didn't mean anything so I am not angry over it being pretentious. It was just silly.
The Prestige was pretty good (plus it had David Bowie, and David Bowie makes anything better). It was a story with depth that didn't take a pack of hunting dogs and a ouija board to find the point. I like meaningful, thought provoking stories, just not disjointed stories that try to pretend that being disjointed is the same thing as being deep.
