It's pretty easy to tell right away if you are going to like an anime or not. The first episode usually spells it out for us. But, sometimes, we decide quickly that an anime is not interesting enough and move on, only to come back later, give it a second chance and end up liking it. Has this ever happened to you? Which animes did you dislike at first, only to come back and become a fan of it? What made you change your mind and why did you give it a second chance?

For me: (Ironically, this happened with every anime in my top five favorites of all time.)

1. Hunter X Hunter

My current all time favorite, I initially only watched the first episode of the series of the remake when it first came out. I didn't too much care for it and dropped it. I recently only returned to it a few months ago out of boredom and it hooked me. Really, it was Killua Zoldyck that drew me in. Now, after the change to a far more brutal and cold format, this anime has become my favorite of all time.

2. One Piece

I didn't hate One Piece at first, it just didn't grab me. It actually took me about 5 years just to get to episode 4. But, once I finally got to episode 4, there was a moment that shocked me, when a pirate blew a bandit's brains out at point blank range. That grabbed my attention and I started watching more frequently, until I became a huge fan of the series. Luffy and Zoro are two of my favorite protagonists of all time.

3. Gintama

The first 2 episodes of Gintama just weren't that funny. It was a little funny, but not the kind of laugh out loud hilarity you'd need to make it through a long running anime series like Gintama. I watched the first two episodes, and then didn't watch it again for about a year. But, it was actually the high rating on CR that made me give it a second look. I wish I had done it sooner, because episode 3 and beyond were just so much more hilarious. This is the funniest anime of all time, IMO.

4. Black Lagoon

Now, the first episode of this anime, I didn't like at all. I thought it was going to be idiotic for a basic Japanese salaryman to be passed off to a group of mercenaries. I made the misconception that the anime would revolve mostly around Rock and not around Revy. I didn't come back for several months until online reviews convinced me to give it another shot. I was glad I did, because Revy was pure awesome, Rock developed into a cunning character I could watch and Balalaika was hardcore.

5. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Unlike the other four on the list, I never intended to watch this anime at all. The animation style and magical girl theme made me immediately think it was for little girls. I wrote it off immediately. It wasn't until a friend told me that the anime wasn't what I thought it was and I needed to watch, that I decided to give it a go. I was floored. And when the episode showing Homura's back story aired, this became my 5th favorite anime of all time.

Bakuman - I honestly thought it was going to be some sappy romance because the first few episodes were indicative of that. I was wrong, the romance is sparse throughout the series serving mainly as one of many motivators for the progression of the story. Also all of the characters are very practical, likable, and smart.

I thought the main heroine Azuki Miho was going to be a typical damsel in distress type of figure, only waiting for the main character to save her. That was not the case, she was very understanding, intelligent, and encouraging. She is ideal in a realistic manner (as opposed to ideal in a harem anime manner.)

Anyway, if anyone was turned off by this anime because of the corny set up in the beginning, go back and watch it until they start to actually draw manga, it gets REALLY good after that point.

These two. Hated them at first,
but they're my top 2 anime now.

As for HxH, I've always liked it since the beginning.

i know what you mean for the longest time i didn't like One Piece & hunter X hunter
but when i decided to give these animes another chance i saw that the one piece i watched wasn't the original but a heavily censored & edited version (the 4kids version) so that part with the guy getting his brains shot out didn't happen when i first saw it . also due to the censorship the tragic stories that the characters had to endure in one piece where not fully fleshed out
as for hunter X hunter it just didnt grab my attention but when i was encouraged to watch it i quickly began to like it and now i ~schwing~ every time i see either leorio or hisoka!

A couple of Yoshitoshi Abe's titles like Serial Experiments Lain, Haibane Renmei and Texhnolize.

On most of his titles I had a lot of trouble even getting through the first episode, After Episode one I just took the disk out of the player and put it back into its box leaving the series in their boxes and collecting dust for several months or even years.
Once I pushed myself beyond those notorious first episodes I simply could not stop watching anymore and marathoned them start to finish only to conclude that I have yet again watched a masterpiece.

Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA ILLYA

going into this I thought it was going to be another sailor moon rip off set in the Type moon universe.

Boy was I wrong what I got was a cross between Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero the story was dark and gritty with funny bit sprinkled in. The fight scenes were jaw dropping good the art looked like it was done by Ufotable

The only problem I have with it it was too short but there is a second season in 2014 Yay!!!!!

I'm usually not wrong about an anime, but one that immediately comes to mind is Chuunibyou. it started off pretty much how I thought it would, but took a drastic turn for the different around halfway. was a pleasant surprise.

Ouran High School Host Club is one of my all time favorite anime, I've seen it a million times but the first time I watched it I immediately dropped it after after one episode because of all the man service. I went back to it months later out of morbid curiosity and straight-up boredom and I'm glad I did because once I got over(became desensitized to) the man service it became one the funniest shows I ever had the pleasure to sit through.

Hmm, definitely Sakurasou no pet na Kanojo (or equally: The pet girl of sakurasou)

I personally believed that this anime was going to be just another obviously painful to watch romance between two protagonists, and probably a love triangle. And I was right, but for all the wrong reasons. Despite the slightly clichéd characters, and the average plot, it was still absolutely stunning. I reckon it's probably partially down to the superb animation of the piece, and the jaw-dropping colour palette used, but also because you came to emphasize with the characters. Even if you knew that they weren't original the way it was written was so perfect, that despite myself, I came to love certain characters and hate others. Gosh, I even cried at parts and I don't often cry at fiction, especially animated fiction. Sure the characters start off cliché, and the plot is obvious, every foreshadowed twist stabs a knife in your chest and twists it all around. Either way, it's definitely one to check out.

Log Horizon. When I first heard about it I immediately dismissed it as a Sword Art Online clone. Then I saw Arkada's first reactions to it and decided to give it a shot. Now it's one of my favorites of the season along with Kill la Kill.
