To me it sounds like "brrroww" where the r's are rolled. As if they purred while making the sound. When they're angry or something else, it sounds like "rrraawrrrr". It's not exactly like "rawr" but like "ror" too.

I suppose it's closer to "meow" than it is to "nyan", but really it's a series of trills, tones, and hums which generally mean either "I'm hungry", "I want attention", or "I don't want attention right now". A loud "maaa" indicates hunger, a gentle "brrreow" means "I want attention", and a deeper, harder "brrow" means "I don't want attention right now".

But really, my favorite sound a cat makes is its purring. Puts me right to sleep.
