I prefer AnoHana. While both are firmly in my top 30 list, AnoHana's sitting in the single digits.

Spoilers ahead in my explanation. You've been warned.

Clannad AS would have had more of an impact on me if they all ...

Honesty, I had water works all the way to the end and then Poof.

Tragedy becomes fantasy which turns into happy ending some how.

I still love it though

100% agree. My initial reaction at the ending was confusion, and then I had to go online and read up about the end to fully understand what happened. Then, I was pretty angry. Personally, I love tragedy, and not-so-happy endings are amazing to me. So the Clannad AS miracle happy ending at the last second was ridiculous and dampened the impact of the show IMO.

You also have to take into account the time frames of each show.

Clannad and ~after story~ take place over a time frame of around 8 years give or take a few.

While anohana takes place over the course of around 3-5 months (Relating that to the school uniform change that happens during the show).

As for anohana being immature, it's suppose to be, as here we have people who haven't properly healed after a tragic death that they all feel responsible for and it haunts each and every one of them. Jinta became a shut in due to losing his best friend and his mom in a short period of time, Yukiatsu turned into a cross dresser, Tsuruko's kind of withdrawn and latched on to Yukiatsu, Anaru just goes with whatever her friends do, and Popo runs away to see the world because he can't deal with what happened back then. For all of them those emotions are still raw and none of them have properly dealt with the grief that they feel.

I like anohana better, because I felt it dealt with the loss issue better, and resolved it without having the save game load happy ending that ~after story~ got. anohana's ending is great because, while sad, it's also overwhelmingly positive.

I enjoy both.

But I care more about Clannad ~AS~ because I knew that it would be a
.
Plus with all the
.

And ImO I liked the characters in Clannad more then AnoHana.

And remember, ~AS~ is based on a visual novel and they did a fantastic adaption like Kanon 2006 and ... Air (?)

Speaking of Anohana, Poppo is the worst am I right? Instantly brought to mind the dude near the end of Saving Private Ryan.

Clannad AS, hands down.

For me was a fantastic story. About growing up, family and living. I loved the characters. I care about them.

In other hand Anohana was ok. But somehow ended being quite forgettable. I'm still not sure why, but didn't impact me in the same way that Clannad did.

Clannad is in my TOP 10, with Kanon, Madoka and GuP. Anohana ... well, not.

Both are great shows and it is hard to compare the two. Anahonna is a tight story that deals with a group of ex-childhood friends, dealing with their guilt over how one of them died when they were children. It does a great job of telling the story and showing a bit of how they move on from their guilt.

Clannad AS deals with a lot of becoming an adult struggles along with the death of a spouse and a child. It does a good job of showing these struggles. I personally found the ending a bit a confusing, as the need for the main character to collect the orbs to bring back his wife and daughter wasn't made clear. Still, it is a very strong story about growing up as an adult and dealing with loss.

I really like both, and can't choose one over the other.

Persoanlly I love Anohana, but i haven't seen Clannad so i can't make an informed decision.

Can someone explain some things to me?

Is Clannad and Clannad After story the same thing?Like when people refer to Clannad, are they talking about after story?

I apologize for the silly question, I just really want to watch this show.

Clannad After Story is the sequel to Clannad and completes its story. When most people say "Clannad", they're either referring to the first season only, or more commonly the series as a whole (Clannad + Clannad AS).

Its not a silly question, as stuff like that can be a tad confusing if you're not familiar with the series. . I Still haven't fully worked out how the Tsubasa series works, myself lol.

I literally JUST finished Anohana, and I really enjoyed it. That being said, Clannad AS stuck with me a lot more. After Story remains the only piece of visual media (movie, show, etc.) that has made me cry. And boy, did I cry, haha. It just struck all the right chords with me I guess; I truly think it just touched on a lot of my greatest fears in life.

I honestly don't begrudge the ending of Clannad AS at all, because in all honesty I don't think the ending matters. It was all about the journey for me. Whether
in the end didn't really matter to me, the impact would have been just as strong either way. I don't know if I can think of another show that hit me so hard during the build-up that the ending didn't even matter, haha. I guess the best way I can say it is that the things I took away from that show were given to me before the last episode.

Anohana was really enjoyable and I admire what was able to be done in just 11 short episodes, but it's very different from Clannad. Every episode had some amount of positivity in it, despite the drama. In general it was a wholly feel-good experience for me--even the sad moments were kind of happy in a way, and at the very least I was never thrust into total despair, haha.

I can only feel this one out, as both shows are meant to bring the feels. Clannad brought the feels and reduced me to a blubbering wet mass of tears and snot. Anohana didn't even come close, haha. It doesn't mean it's a bad series by any means, it just didn't ruin me, lol.

Definitely watch Clannad before Clannad: After Story--the whole arc makes it great.
