How does someone "own" a mistress?

I'm not sure what I think of it, really. It's weird. I don't see the point in wanting to sleep with anyone but the person you're in love with.

If someone is forced into a loveless marriage and/or can't escape from one, I can hardly condemn him for seeking solace elsewhere. Much less, the almost miraculous probability of him being truly forced into having one or more (stranger things happen). Otherwise, I feel a moderate amount of contempt.

It's not even supposed to be sacred. Natural marriages occurred much earlier than so-called sacred ones.

The whole "owns" thing to me implies slavery, and well that's just right out.

I don't mean only in a religious way, but all meanings of the term, such as: "Dedicated or devoted exclusively to a single use, purpose, or person".

Though others would probably only refer to it as sacred in a religious, holy, or venerated way.
