I think it matters where you live... in some places Christmas is a quiet family thing while New Years is the big party into the New Year. Other places is the exact opposite where Christmas is more of a party while New Years is spent quietly. Some places both are big parties and others both are quiet. Then it also comes down to personal preference.

For me I like New Years. Christmas people expect too much with gifts and crap, so I don't like dealing with it, THOUGH I do like all the festive parts of Christmas, lights, thoughtful presents (in that you didn't have to beg someone all year in order to get it and they just gave you something nice), and stuff like that. New Years, whether drunk or sober, loud party or quiet, all it is is just waiting for the New Year to ring in with maybe some fireworks. So I like it more.

New Years. Christmas is a day. New Years is a 2 or 3 day thing with family, friends, random strangers your parents and relatives say are family friends whom you have never met before. Christmas is fun, but New Years is definitely better. Fireworks, mochi, osechi (at least with the buddhist half of the family), and just overall good times. If you have asthma, definitely stay away from Hawaii (especially Oahu) on New Year's. By 9pm the entire island is generally covered in smoke. Which many last in parts through the next day depending on the trade winds. Fun times though, if you are not asthmatic.

Plus New Year's Eve features Kōhaku (Kōhaku Uta Gassen - Red and White Song Festival / Battle). Always good times there.

Downside...Goya soup (bitter melon) from the Okinawan side. If the price of a few extra years of life requires the consumption of bitter melon, I would gladly trade those years for another chocolate sundae. That, and kombu is the spawn of the devil.

Christmas! We're still recovering from it by the time New Year's turns around.

...also, you don't get presents at New Year's

Nah not just that aha, I always find the anticipation and family atmosphere is much greater for Christmas. We normally just stay in at home for New Year's rather than meet up with other family.

New Years cuz drunk.

But in all seriousness... Christmas can be stressful and I have to make small talk with extended family (not my specialty). At New Year I just get to let loose, shoot off fire works, and see how much poison I can shove into my body in 8 hours. Plus there's the feeling of worldly togetherness that you get when you wake up hungover on new year's day and know that millions upon millions of people feel just as bad as you do.

Personally gift-giving holidays upset me >-< I'm a really modest person and I feel awkward opening up gifts in front of people. I hate having to constantly focus on making sure I look enthused so I don't upset people. Parents are divorced so I have to go to like 5 peoples houses for Christmas and it's tiring. Christmas has lost a lot of magic and becomes more of a chore.

Although I did have good whiskey this Christmas ;D

So my answer is New Years! x3 I LOVE fireworks, (and fire in general) so to me it's a lot like the 4th of July. It's also really exciting to countdown to the new year, and it's pretty amazing seeing different countries all around the world celebrate it ^^

Christmas. I don't like having a bunch of people over, but I do enjoy making the kids happy with my gifts (and my emotional grandmother). New Years is a pointless and annoying holiday. You are celebrating literally nothing. So what if it's a new year? It's just another excuse for people to get drunk.

Christmas feels like nothing since I gotten older. New Years is just nothing because it's just another new year.

Meh to both.

Christmas! I rarely do anything for New Year's. Though I do like fireworks. Besides, Christmas has that warm-fuzzy feeling that you can share with family and friends while New Year's is either an excuse to party and get drunk or a time for reflection... Which is more sobering than fun.

I've never really cared for New Years to be honest, sure the fireworks are nice but it's just another day to me..
