Movie. The series picks up directly after the movie and makes no sense without watching the movie first.

Firstly, the movie served as a good introduction on how the idol unit was form. Was surprise to see that they put a back story for Mayu where she was the former centre of I-1 who was forced to graduate over some incident. They haven't said what it is, but it may be something important later on in the TV series run along with her family issues.

Also while the President betrayed the girls and took all their money and ran, she did see something in the girls to create an idol group of raw talent. I think she thought she was screwed since Mayu never really joined so may as well leave town before it got worse. Also if people think the fan-service is excessive with the panty flashing during the dance... I'm sorry but they have been keeping it rather tame as far, and this is the result of gravity and motion. Hell, I give props to the manager in that he wanted to get something to cover their panties, but Miyu mentions this as service.

Then moving onto the 1st TV episode proper, while it may seem cheap reusing clips from the movie, I say it's a sorta advertisement for the movie for the Japanese viewers to check out the movie as well.

I had a good chuckle at the cynicism of the internet when a fan posted a message they saw Mayu performaning again and it's the usual "PICS OR IT DIDNT HAPPEN" comments.

Essentially onwards now that the agency is facing closure, the girls decided that they still want to keep being idols and would figure out how to keep the agency open. Of couse they need help and Matsuda being desparate since he took help from some shady looking producer who's first task was asking the girls to get into a swimsuit. Swimsuit for idols isn't a new thing, but jumping right into it, yeah I'll be a bit skeptical since they are having rather bad luck at the moment with the agency.

So all in all I'm rather pleased with this. Sure it's no idolmaster or Love Live but like it's idol, this show is a diamond in the rough and can't wait to see how well it will progress under Yamakan's direction.

This!!!! Don't try to watch episode 1 without the movie! Episode 1 is really episode 2 or 3 if you count the 52 minute movie as two episodes.

But that was really good! It is trying to be realistic about the business, not just fantasy like LoveLive! which I love but who makes the songs? Maki on her piano and her Mac at home? Maybe but they really just don't worry about it. Here they're like, "Twinkle made the song for us?" but at least it was better than all the other bad songs they had made.

I really enjoyed the straight man humor in it. Really good stuff.

Definitely will be watching this one!

And yet episode 1 was placed in front of the film in my queue. Luckily I went to this thread first and saw that I needed to watch the film first.

Didn't know there was a movie, the first episode wasn't difficult to follow though. But I'll probably pass; stories about idols make me really anxious, so it's hard for me to enjoy them.

The only one I've ever followed is the AKB49: Renai Kinshi Jourei manga.

I somehow timed it perfectly, I started the movie exactly it's duration before the first episode became available, to the second! That'll never happen again...

On to something else... anyone has a favourite idol yet?
I'm supporting Kaya. Oldest and probably the most mature of the lot (and legal too... )

My favorite too. Mainly cause she's an Amazon(the tallest of the bunch and probably the strongest, and she isn't above doing some manual labor).

Wake Up, Girls! Shichinin no Idol Episode 1
Good background on how the group was formed and some backstory on each of the girls too.

Wow,that bitch left with all the money they had funded >:(.Hopefully she regards her decision when they reach success.

Mayu joins the group.Liked the song she sung in the park.

Didn't like the performance at first till they started singing in engrish. And could have done without the pantsu service. But otherwise pretty good 7/10.

Edit: Forgot. Encore!!!Encore!!!Encore!!!

Who was the black-haired buzz-kill? I'd probably vote for her.

If I had to pick, mine would go to Nanami Hisami, because her character design reminds me that of AKB48's Takamina.

The leader? That would be Nanase Yoshino.

So far I'm mostly interested in Mayu. Her story is interesting and I'm already rooting for her just based on her circumstances.

I watched episode 1 without having seen the movie. So far it's actually kind of what I was looking for, ie, a more serious idol type show where they'd introduce the less 'savory' elements that plague the idol business, compared to the more light hearted ones like Love Live!. Hopefully there will be a lot of suffering to come.

Episode 1 at least gives a decent overview of a few of the characters. Mayu is obviously the main heroine, and her conflict is already outlined. Being a washup trying to re-enter seems like it'd be pretty difficult, especially if she was kicked out of her original group for doing something that might have offended fans (just look at some of the AKB scandals). The 2chan chat at the beginning seems to suggest something like that probably happened. Her former group building a stadium where they're at will definitely ignite some sparks down the line.

The other girls don't get as much coverage but judging from what little screen time they got, I'd say aside from Mayu, Miyuu and Minami seem like the most dedicated, with Miyu already coming up with her intro and Minami indicating that it's her dream to be an idol. Hisami seems like she's more into drama, and the whole idol thing is just another way for her to enter the drama world. Yoshina and Kaya don't seem to be too into it, and Airi only has some screen time as Mayu's friend.

The live dance was pretty nicely done as there was no CG involved (I really hated the CG use in Love Live!). I'll be satisfied as long as the rest of the dances are as good. I'm guessing a lot of the sameface syndrome is a method of cost saving in order to put all their budget into the dances, which I guess is a fair trade off.

The episode also ended on an interesting note. Going 'gravure' is a pretty common route for less popular idols to go in order to gather more fans. The company that expressed interest obviously doesn't think much of the girls aside from using them as a 'meat' service. How they resolve this issue will give a pretty good indicator of the type of writing this show will move forward with, so I hope it's not solved with any contrivances.

Singing wise Mayu is my favorite cause she's got the best vocals.Other character design/appearance wise it would have to be Kaya.

My favorite's probably the maid cafe girl Miyu. I tend to like the more hyper characters.
