For series there is Serial Experiments Lain directed by Ryutaro Nakamura and Paranoia Agent directed by the late and great Satoshi Kon.

Speaking of Kon, there is the film Perfect Blue, which is, imo, one of the anime film classics. Also while not psychological horror, Kon's Paprika was a total mind fuck at times.

All three of these are awesome. Perfect Blue i still have the video tape of from way back. Really great movie and a look at the dark side of idol culture and otaku obsession in Japan. Serial Experiments Lain i'd recommend to anyone. I believe it defines greatness in the terms of psychological thrillers and is one of the most influential anime of the 90's.

Check out those mentioned and Corpse Party as well.

I could not agree more, although Corpse party Tortured Souls very different from the game and that it skips hours of gameplay, holy schnitzel is the turnout great. The way they made it different from the game is amazing and I could wait until I finished the 4 episodes .

Oh Yeah!! Higurashi, watch that one, if you just get past the few sequences without getting bored, because it's kind of weird for a starter, but really.. It is worth it, but do remember to watch the sequel :P
Maybe also Mirai Nikki
