Hi, my name is Meniscus70, and I have a series-finishing problem.

I currently have about 30 anime series in my queue here at Crunchyroll. I have managed to complete about 12 of them. There are two or three right now that I am sure I will complete as the episodes come out. The rest? Started, but abandoned somewhere along the way, sometimes after 3 episodes, but sometimes as far as 10 episodes into a 13-episode series.

It's that latter group that I am concerned about. Sure, everyone tries shows that they realize they just don't like, but why would an otherwise reasonable, emotionally healthy adult watch half of a long series (eg Sword Art Online) that they really enjoyed, and then just...?

Why would someone watch all but the last 2-3 episodes of a series and not be able to make themselves finish? I have *several* series that I have watched 10 episodes of, but they're just sitting there...

Is there a support group for this? A 12-step program? I want to finish these series, I like them, I just can't seem to break the habit... of not finishing.

I've never heard of this problem, it sounds serious. You should go see a psychiatrist.

I don't really understand. How can you like a series and not finish it? Is this because you get busy and cannot get back to the show or do you just stop watching for no apparent reason?

Anyway, this thread seems like a personal issue. It might get locked.

Lol I don't think it's that serious. I'm pretty sure you just lack commitment and endurance. Just find some free time and turn on your unfinished anime, and no excuses.

mm - Sounds like lack of interest. For me, I tend to watch the first 6 episodes, even for shows that turn out to be crap. If I don't like it by the time I finish the 6th, even if I'm halfway through, I quit right there.

This is me. Even if I absolutely love an anime, I won't watch it for a while, even if i do have time. I guess its because i have SO many other hobbies...

I find this occurs if the anime is not of interest to me. I just happen to pick it up to see what all the hype is about and a particular number of episodes in, I instantly find myself regretting this decision. Some examples include Fairy Tail, SAO (when they introduce ALfheim), Bleach/Naruto (after a certain point it really just turns into repetition with little creativity and pulling out all the stops in order to prolong the life of the anime as much as they can). Then, of course, there is anime that is just so bad or lacking that you can't bear to watch it. Just drop those one!

However, I'm sure we all have our fair share of unfinished anime - I'm guilty of this too! I watched every episode of Inu x Boku SS except for the very last because I didn't want to finish it for whatever reason(?). Perhaps I felt like the anime needed to be longer with more substance because I loved the pairing. Perhaps you want to avoid post anime depression!

You want to be able to enjoy your anime experience so perhaps set aside some time to get all comfy, have some tea and snacks or whatever floats your boat and watch something that genuinely interests you!

Oh man, I've a bunch of (enjoyable!) series I've watched more than half way through and then never gotten around to finishing. I left Trigun, Wolf's Rain, and Evangelion at around episode 16/24-26, and I've only 2 episodes left of Phantom Memory Kurau, Last Exile, Birdy the Mighty:Decode, and FMA: Brotherhood to go. Those are (in case you didn't know) all really good shows, and yet...I still haven't finished them. Maybe I'm afraid they won't be able to pull off the ending satisfactorily?

Even I cannot bring myself to finish watching Valvrave the liberator. I just don't want it to end that I can't bring myself to accept that the anime is almost over.

I only forget about shows if I only watch like.. 3-6 episodes then never return. But if I make it to 10+ for sure I will watch it all.

I must admit I haven't really done this.. I have one or two anime like that in my list but I plan to get back to them.. The only reason I stopped was because I wanted a break to watch something else, and I end up finishing that one before going back to the original ones I was watching. Other than that, the only reason I end up doing that is if I like the anime, but there's a certain part that I don't like that I'm stuck on. When I say that, I'm referring to Bakuman. Beforehand, I read the manga, and there's a certain part I can't stand in it (a certain editor.. :I) and now I'm stuck on that part in season 2, and have never finished it. Usually when I stop, though, I haven't watched more than 5 or so episodes..

This is why I like 13 or 24 episode shows. I feel like I enjoy it, finish it up, then move on to something else. The ones which go on forever (300 episodes, 500, etc) I tend to stop for whatever reason, even if I am still enjoying the show.

I have this problem 99% of the time. I have come to the conclusion that I just don't find anime that interesting anymore. I read a lot more manga than I watch anime

I have the same issue, and I've noticed the root of the problem seems to be what is commonly called "the void". When a truly great anime comes along and you finish it as fast as you can because it is so amazing, many are left with a sense of loss, as if that is the best anime they will ever get. "The void" in their hearts is opened and only a truly great piece of work or a lot of time can heal "the void".

However, the more you experience the void, the more you become afraid of it; ergo, many do not finish series in order to avoid opening the void once again. I've experienced this with a lot of good works. Common void triggering anime include:

Code Geass
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Gintama
The World God Only Knows (with exception to the manga, which is ongoing)
SKET Dance

And so on and so forth

If anyone can create a permanent cure for "the void", I am open to suggestions.
