Treize Khushrenada and Zechs Marquise all day over any of the Gundam pilots in GW. Their motivations and methods were superior in every way. Without the two of them nothing would have really changed.

I consider neither of those characters as villains. Trieze may hands down be the biggest hero in the series in the long run, actually. I guess they are still antagonists, though, even if they aren't villains... However, the protagonist is just the main character that we follow and the antagonist is just the person going against that person. There are series where the protagonist is the villain (Light Yagami) and the antagonist is not the villain (L) so... Would L be considered an antagonist? Cause I sure as hell like him a hell of a lot better than Light "god complex" Yagami... <.<

In the first season of Gundam 00 I liked Sergei/Soma/Graham way more than Celestial Being. When they finally had the Gundam Meisters cornered with their superior tactics I was pretty happy to see them finally get beaten...only for them to get saved last minute by the Thrones...

Came one to post the same characters, not sure if I agree with your reasons as to why, but they definitely were antagonists that werent the villain.

Edit: Don't forget Lucrezia Noin. While not a main villain, was still a pretty important character.

I'm curious, what do you want in a villain?

For the topic, before his heel-face turn Vegeta from DBZ

I don't want a tragic villain in my anime.

You're one of a handful of people to see it that way, and I'm in total agreement with you on Trieze. I've always seen L as the hero antagonist to the villian protagonist Light.

just about every villain in psyren. i don't find myself invested much with the protagonist (though i do really like some of the other 'good' characters), but i really really enjoy all the antagonists within it so yea that happened.

Quite often, and quite obviously.

This is only problematic in shows that tend to be over-moral. I'm trying to think up a good one but I'm drawing blanks at the moment.

Ever watch a movie or anime in which the villain has a proper and reasonable goal/ambition, and the Hero/story is all about how wrong the villain is, but you're sitting their going "eeer, he has a point"

Now, in terms of cool characters. Char Aznable is among the greatest Villains anime has created. Amuro Ray is the greatest Mecha Pilot, but he's nothing in terms of cool compared to Char.

It depends on who is either more heroic or more logical.

An example would be Sora from .hack// although he wasn't exactly an antagonist. What he was cool was, because while everyone else was taking playing an MMO seriously, he was having fun, pking, and just playing it as a game. He was essentially a mockery of everyone else, and he was completely right in doing so, because in actuality it was just a game.

In Hellsing, I wouldn't say I like anyone more than anyone else. I can say I do like the three main forces equally though, one is partially an antagonist and the other is completely an antagonist. I like both Father Andersen and The Major just as much as I like Alucard. All three characters are basically like a moral game of rock paper scissors. Alucard = Kills for the sake of killing, Andersen = Kills for the sake of his religion, The Major = kills for the same of his ambition. The one thing I find funny though, is that the Major realizes he cannot be Alucard, but he doesn't care, that is what makes me love him.

Sword Art Online, Kayaba Akihiko. Just because I feel that if I was a genius programmer, trapping people inside an MMO is something that I would probably do. Flirting with a different girl every week on the other hand is something I probably couldn't achieve, and I would want to kick Kirito's ass out of jealousy.

Full Metal Alchemist - King Bradley, his resilience is scary, he is my role model.
