There's only two guns that matter in this world and that's the guns on this guy. He'll call them whatever the hell he wants.

I dunno, I find the sound of the M2 very soothing... something about it's rate of fire, I cant quite explain it. Once, I was too tired to sleep, it was about midnight, and I heard one firing in the distance..... it was like a lullaby I slept through my shift on fire-watch, though

We used to do this stuff when I was young...

Many guys that went to Vietnam often remarked that the "M" in M16 referred to the plastic stock presumably made be "Mattel" toy company. I know a few guys that were in the Army during the 80's that came to a similar conclusion. Apparently the "M" actually stands for "Model"

The other rumor I remember pretty well was about the Mini-gun (M-134), They called it "Puff the Magic Dragon."

The Colt 45 was actually called the "Peacemaker" and I think it might have been Sam Colt that decided that.

Barret's .50 BMG and McMillans's .50 BMG were used for shooting silhouettes at over 1000 yards as well as sniper rifles... They usually can't penetrate heavily armored vehicles but you can sure screw up planes and support vehicles with them. I almost bought a Barret Light rifle but the .50 bullets were kind of spendy even if I loaded them myself. The bullets themselves weigh about an ounce and a half.

Was down in Texas, with some co-workers. We spent....400 dollars in .50 cal ammo alone that day (40 rounds). Then again, an AR-50 runs about 10 grands...there is that.

If I had an extra 10k laying around, I'd have me an .50 cal rifle. If for no other reason then to say, WHY NOT.

On topic, no. Most gun naming conventions have some meaning behind them.

Handguns are Cowboy Killers or Thug-Insurance (revolvers and glocks, respectively)
.22s are Plinkers
Shotguns are Boomsticks
Hunting Rifles are .... just Rifles

Oh, and then there's The Bane

HA HA you kids are funny. My M4 was a peach in Iraq. NEVER had any issues with it because I knew how to take care of it. I've never had an issue learning the names/model numbers of weapons so I'm fine with the way it is.

The names of guns become a lot easier to understand once you get what it means. Most names give you information.

eg: AK 47 guess which year it originally came out?

MP 40: Yup 1940 (machine pistol)

MG 42 : Machine Gun 1942.

shot guns have the size of the shell in the name for the most part.

MP5,7,9 the highest number is the newest gun in that line up.

This is the shortest answer to the op I could give.

It's really gonna sadden you to know that your manly desire to name your guns is shared by the girls at http://www.crunchyroll.com/stella-womens-academy-high-school-division-class-c3. Well, it was cute when they did it.

Are you kidding me? Women have every right to name their guns! They can paint them girly colors too. In fact, I want a pink and teal sniper rifle that blows bubbles every time a shot rings out from its adorable chassis.

If you think gun names are ridiculous, then maybe you don't know about titin?
The chemical name of titin is 189,819 letters long, and took a guy 3.5 hours to pronounce the entire name.

Honestly think guns are stupid and annoying as hell. Although we wouldn't have the world that we have today without them.

Oh, and yes, I don't understand the names at all lol
