and i'll call you a w*nker because let's face it you do that a lot too xD.

I think even in japan depending on who you're talking to/with otaku can be good too.

If we ever have a thread about whether or not Kotaku is good, I'm going to vote DEFINITELY YES.

But I guess that this isn't the thread for that.

I don't take offense to words that much... but If I get the feeling that someone expects me to... I might, if they mean anything to me that is.

Generally if untrue, don't take offense to it... simple as

Personally I think it depends on where you're from. In Japan it is negative. In other country it can just refer to hardcore anime fans or anime nerds. I dont call myself an otaku but call yourself whatever you like.

Gives a fairly good break down on the term if anyone has the time.

My own opinion:

Its just a word no more, no less.

after the otaku murders in japan the term has become very negative I personaly consider myself a fan not a otaku

Haha, better look up the word "fan or fanatic" then, I don't think that word is as great as society thinks it is-.-

Well, my opinion on the fact.. hmm, I don't think Otaku is that bad, but of course when someone is obsessed in something to that extent, that they might act violently, that is when I start to dislike it, but I think the majority of those who call them an Otakus aren't as stupid as those, which murder other people "as stated in the quote" But I don't know any statistics, so don't take my word for it.

I am neither a fan or a Otaku, I love anime, but not to the extent of being a fanatic of anime, which nobody really should -.- And am not as obsessed with anime as a Otaku is.

I'll give my honest opinion I call myself an otaku because I like anime way too much.. I call myself a gamer because I spend a lot of time playing video games I don't really take into account how people see it or if they say it to offend/praise me, it's just a way of describing myself but I have to admit I hate the term weeaboo and I might get offended if someone calls me that.

This is essentially, exactly my view. (Including the hatred of the term "Weeaboo". Not quite sure why I hate it, perhaps the fact that it sounds like baby gibberish >.> )

The word itself is viewed in Japan as someone who gathers information on one subject. It doesn't necessarily mean anime/manga. Its looked down on in Japan because the person is not contributing anything to anyone, they're just staying home, on the internet.

According to this definition, I am one.

Otaku are portrayed by Japanese people (in news, Anime, Manga, forums and so forth) as shut in males (generally) with strange fetishes who are unemployed and spend 24/7 inside their dirty apartment, are unhygienic and unhealthy and lack social and life skills Do you really wish to take that title upon yourself?

And by this definition, I am almost one? (have a job, thus spending only like 14-12 hours a day in my dirty apartment, and have no fetishes)

it's pretty much an insult; but some people like to wear it as an honour badge... it's similar to the term "nerd" in that respect. nerd is an offensive term, but some people on the internet think it's cool to label themselves as a "nerd".

Most people would have no idea what an Otaku was, and there most likely response if you said you are one would be one of three:
1. "whats that?"
2." how quaint"
3."good for you"

In the west, otaku is just used to describe an anime/manga fan. I see no problems with it. I like to use the word, myself. It's like calling yourself a nerd or a geek or a gamer, even. I've never actually used it irl, though, because I doubt many would know what it means. If it has a more negative connotation in Japan, though, then I understand why Japanese people would not like to use it.

Weeaboo, though... That is offensive.
