Hi......I am VERY very new to the "anime community" if you guys call it that. I got sick, and I got some free Netflix and I just started watching the dubbed stuff they have on their Xbox app, after I finished watching all the anime Netflix had I started looking online and I used to not be able to handle subbed anime but I'm just now getting to the point where I can not only watch them but thoroughly enjoy them.
With that said, I have some questions for all of you...err...more experienced members of the community. So without further ado
1. Is there a way to keep in touch with the community? (ie. Twitter, Facebook groups, specific forums) I like to talk about the anime/manga I watch/read but none of my friends are even remotely interested so it's almost like speaking to myself.
2. I don't really fit, I guess you would call it the stereotype of typical anime fans (nerdy, anti-social) I like sports and like hanging out with friends and what not, and a few of the people I've met that are heavily into anime act sort of...resentful I suppose is the right word. Is that an issue?
3. I am very heavily interested in how all of you stumbled upon the anime/manga scene and why it interests you so much.
4. If you could recommend things for me to watch, that'd be great since as of now I just pick what title that I can understand (as I only speak English/Spanish)
You don't have to answer all 4 questions, although I would thoroughly enjoy that, you can also troll me as I quite enjoy that as well.

1) I definitely get you there, keeping in touch with anime communities can be a rough thing. This is a good place to start, but another idea is an anime convention, you can meet some other cool anime fans around you, definitely cosplay though, its much easier to break the ice when both parties are in cosplay. From there you could join the Facebook group of that convention, I'm in one for a con back home and some interesting conversations go on, and you could surely keep in touch with others.

2) I could probably consider it an "issue" but don't let it bother you. I like sports, hanging with friends, and such and I've noticed many people, who are otherwise cool can be hostile or negative towards you if they find out you enjoy anime a lot, so with that in mind the resent is understandable.

3) I grew up watching Dragonball Z and Gundam Wing. I really didn't get big into anime until university when a buddy of mine told me this awesome show, Code Geass was a cool mecha series made by the same studio as Gundam, from there I got addicted, now I watch most genres of anime. I didn't get into subbed until I picked up One Piece and I was pretty much forced into it(wasn't going to wait 10 years to catch up those 300 some episodes which weren't dubbed yet).

4)I don't know what genres you enjoy but I'll toss out random English dubbed animes which I've enjoyed in the past;
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
Full Metal Panic!
Code Geass
Gundam Wing and Gundam 00
Death Note
Zegapain

You might have heard this before, but getting used to english subbed would be great, a whole world of Anime out there that isn't dubbed yet!

1. Crunchyroll is definitely a great place for that! Not only that, you can make some pretty wonderful friends here.
2. That's not an issue at all. Not everybody fits into stereotypes. I often have people tell me I don't look like the kind of person who would be into anime, games or anything in between.
3. I grew up watching anime thanks to my brother who got into it through gaming. We had a video store near ours that had tonnes of games and anime (unlike some of the others) and thus our adventure began. Of course we would also use the internet as a great source of anime. I used to be on Crunchyroll back in 2007 before deleting my account and returning with this one. It simply interests me. I'm interested in Japanese culture as well and have a pretty vast knowledge of it so watching anime is as natural to me as it would be for those children who watch power puff girls and other cartoons on a regular basis (although of course I believe a majority of anime is essentially for mature audiences there are obviously ones geared towards children).
4. What kind of genres do you enjoy? If you send me a PM with some themes or concepts you may be interested in, I would be happy to give you a list! I personally never ventured anywhere near Bleach, Naruto, Fairy Tail in my whole life (which has indeed consisted of watching anime) but that's a personal thing, I watched them to a certain point where they were good but due to good reception they were dragged on and on in order to make more money hence hundreds of episodes. If you thoroughly enjoy it and have that kind of time to spend, then by all means be my guest but I don't recommend it. I honestly find it annoying when people say they watch anime but that is all they've watched so broaden your horizons!

1) You're doing it right now :)

2) I'm kinda like you. I'm a bit of a hockey addict and enjoy sports. I hang around and get along with all sorts of people, and I have met people that are heavily into anime that acted "cringe-worthy questionable". However, not fitting the stereotype is no way considered a problem. You share a common interest with the community in enjoying anime and that's all you need.

3) I grew up watching some of the classics like DBZ and Yu Yu Haskusho. Almost a decade later after I moved from the Philippines into the US, i ran into a Team Four Star DBZ parody video. I got hit with the nostalgia train and started watching parts of episodes and read parts of the manga. I found a manga called Shingeki No Kyojin and got into that, later learning that there was an anime that just started back at that time. I greatly enjoyed it after watching it and went on to watch popular or highly acclaimed anime. What interests me so much about anime is that it is a whole different kind of art, with execution that you can't find anywhere else. What I look for is the feels, the shock value, and the plot. With anime, there is a whole lot good shit with a whole lot of variation.

4) Personal Recommendations include........
- Attack on Titan / Shingeki No Kyojin (My personal favorite)
- Death Note (OMFG why did I wait so long to watch this)
- Full Metal Alchemist [Original] and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood ( I suggest watching the first one to appreciate the ending of Brotherhood more)
- Boku No Pico ( I'm just kidding. Seriously though, blow your brains out before watching this)

Voltron was my first. After my girlfriend in high school started making me watch Sailor Moon I got into Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. It was all downhill from there as Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z and Captain Harlock followed. I'm not an expert but I know what I like.

I used to like Voltron as a kid, but that wasn't when I first got into anime. A little later in the days of my youth, I started watching shows like Ronin Warriors, Sailor Moon (which replaced the time slot of Ronin Warriors and had hawt anime girls so I got into it), Dragon Ball, and Dragon Ball Z.

Now before I got into Dragon Ball Z, I bought some anime VHS tapes. My older brother and I, who didn't have jobs yet, saved up money and got things like New Dominion Tank Police, M.D. Geist, Battle Angel, and the best anime we bought on VHS, The Record of Lodoss War (the first one, not that TV series that came later).

Sometime in high school, I got into Trigun, but I never saw the whole thing. My anime viewing became very low for a period. I became a more dedicated fan of anime in 2004 when I started downloading fansubs for the first time and started buying anime DVDs, and I've been into anime since then. Before hand, I was into anime on and off and more of a casual fan.

I got into it through Studio Ghibli films a year ago from a work friends recommendation (some of the best English dubs out there as well), and from there went to Death Note, Madoka Magicka, then Crunchyroll and all of its great offerings :)

Ive been to my first convention recently and its definitely a good place to socialise with people who are into anime in all forms. Plus everyone is there for the same thing so there's nearly always a great vibe! Not used forums and such much until now (first post here) so can't say much about that, but interested to hear other peoples responses.

I have always watched anime now that I look back on it now. I just assumed I was watching "cartoons" until was I was a little bit older I was then able to differentiate between the two.
