Dragon Ball Z for sure, the fighting was just too awesome for my 12 year old eyes, then I started watching Yu Yu Hakusho, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Shaman King, Rurouni Kenshin, etc. too and it just became a big hobby of mine.

I got into it by watching Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket with my sister and Dragonball Z with my brother. Since then I watched a lot of the shows I saw on tv (Bleach, InuYasha, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, just about everything really), but when they stopped airing a lot of shows I moved to Netflix and eventually ended up here.

Might be because of the shows I was first introduced to, but I watch just about all genres, so here's a few I would recommend.
Elfen Leid(if the nudity and almost excessive gore doesn't put you off, it's an awesome show)
Attack on Titan
Angel Beats
Shakugan No Shana(Season 1 was heavy on character development, 2 was more on the action, don't even bother with season 3)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Highschool DxD(again, it has a lot of nudity, but the story is pretty good)
Chrome Shelled Regios
Clannad
Darker Than Black
Death Note
Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero
Hellsing
Log Horizon
Rurouni Kenshin
Soul Eater
Spice and Wolf
Sword Art Online
Wolf's Rain

Alright, more than a few. There should be a least a couple in there you can enjoy though.

Hmmmm. I suppose I fell into that cliche bunch of Pokemon watchers as a kid and when I got older I got involved with Inuyasha and then Bleach. The addiction has been a downward spiral ever since.

1. To keep in touch i usually use check Twitter and Reddit and look for news about shows and movies.

2. many people belive their are sterotypes for anime watchers, I play baseball, hang out with friends, and watch anime. As long as you enjoy the show your watching you shouldn't worry.

3. I was maybe around 6 or 7 and watch early shows like Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, and later on Naruto(before shippuden) and one piece.

4. I will list a few that should be watch or that i enjoyed. Main show to watch. FairyTail,GoldenTime,Bakemonogatari, The girl who Lept through time. And Summer wars.

HighSchool of the dead(dubbed) ,HighSchool DxD, Kiacho wa maid sama(dubbed if able to find), Chuunibyou, Toradora, Suzuka( a good love story that was worth the watch dubbed), Lovely Complex( another good romantic comedy), Seitokai yakuindomo, Princess lover, Boku wa tomadachi ga sukunai, Soul eater, Sankarea, The pet girl of Sakurasou, Mysterious girlfriend X( Great show if you can get by the one weird thing the main characters),Lucky star, THE MONOGATARI SERIES (NEKOMONOGATARI, BAKEMONOGATARI,NISEMONOGATARI,THEN MONOGATRI) sorry for all caps i really love this show its great, Watamote, KillLaKill, these are some great show you should watch to see the wide variety anime has to offer.

I got into anime when i was a kid probably 6/7 in the philippines and the the first few anime that really got me so into to it are kenshin, DBZ?DB GT, shaman king, eye shield 21 and even Flame of Recca

i guess i just love the thrill that it gives me when i'm watching anime and no i don't kind of fit into a big group of people because they will be gossiping about parties, gf/bf and other stuff but i could careless

Overall i just love anime ( going emotional :P) because it is my getaway from everything and anything for a little while and it even makes me sometimes happy when i watch funny animes like Lupin or One Piece and it can also make me feel sad by watching animus like Canon and one of my favourites Clannad and After Story

1. Is there a way to keep in touch with the community? (ie. Twitter, Facebook groups, specific forums) I like to talk about the anime/manga I watch/read but none of my friends are even remotely interested so it's almost like speaking to myself.

I know there are groups out there... but finding legitimate ones that are not full of trolls is hard... I just use CR. Good community overall, most who have similar likes as you... just have to start talking to people.

2. I don't really fit, I guess you would call it the stereotype of typical anime fans (nerdy, anti-social) I like sports and like hanging out with friends and what not, and a few of the people I've met that are heavily into anime act sort of...resentful I suppose is the right word. Is that an issue?

Everyone is different. And if you're like me you've been labeled as so many stereotypes it doesn't even matter anymore... As for it being an issue... well I would think an average fan probably wouldn't care one way or another... but the hardcore heavy what people would call "stereotypical" anime fan is... well someone who can't even talk to the opposite gender... much less have the looks to accomplish this... from what I have seen... soo... dunno... I guess it could be an issue... but... if someone doesn't like me it doesn't bother me much.

3. I am very heavily interested in how all of you stumbled upon the anime/manga scene and why it interests you so much.

Throwing out the usual answer everyone has of "I started when I was a kid with Toonami...". I started last year when visiting a friend she started watching Baka and Test. We ended up watching all of it in one day, and it's just been more and more series since then.

4. If you could recommend things for me to watch, that'd be great since as of now I just pick what title that I can understand (as I only speak English/Spanish)

I don't personally like recommending Anime... especially without knowing your likes/dislikes... but even then its because what I find a great Anime or hilarious, etc. you could think is utter crap or the most bland thing you've ever seen.

When I was younger, I used to spend a lot of time with this Japanese family. Their son liked anime a lot, so I watched shows while visiting their house. It wasn't until years later that I started to watch anime online by myself.

My first experience was with Sailor Moon. I wasn't allowed to watch it (or a lot of other cartoons/anime) when I was little due to my religious parents but I watched it anyway. Then I moved on to Inuyasha when I discovered it on Adult Swim. I've been a fan ever since.

1. I personally like to discuss online. unfortunately i don't know many that share this particular interest of mine in arms reach.
. 2. I will never begin to understand people that feel the need to be snooty towards others that may be on a different level of interest . This community in particular has its moments with those that go beyond the level of extremest. they at times find the need to make others question there interest just so they don't flood the message boards talking about dubbed mainstream. what these individuals always seem to forget . at some point in there lives most likely that is what introduced them to the world of anime and manga in the first place, But with the bad come trillions of good humble fans that come in all shapes and sizes. I feel if you truly love something you would do nothing but share and contribute to help what you love grow. to really answer your question , never feel like just because you don't fit the stereotype you can't enjoy something. and no it is not a problem. I can relate when it comes to not fitting the stereotype, but honestly what need is there to create a label. a hobby is a hobby. Having more than one just makes you that much more of a well rounded person.
3.I have been a long time viewer and reader. I cant recall exactly when it started. Most likely when they first started airing some of the following titles.
Tenchi Muyo , Gundam Wing, outlaw star,Cowboy Bebop,Trigun, InuYasha the original zoids, yu yu hakusho, db,dbz . From there as soon as i was granted access to the internet everything was free game. I have always liked that there is not a limitation of creativity.

4. my preference is simply as long as there is a decent plot and story being told i will give it a try no matter what genre. with that being said i would recommend trying out some older 90/2000 anime or anything that at least has finished seasons. work your way to some new titles for the current season. if you especially like anything involving sport .

check out the original hajime no ippo(this one is about boxing)
eyeshield 21( this one is about american football)
yowapeda (this one is new this season and is about cycling )
kuroko's basketball (in its current second season and is obviously about basketball )

or when in doubt start with what crunchyroll has to offer (which is alot) and work your way alphabetical. if you are not enjoying a particular title at least watch up to 3 episodes. if it has not hooked you by then reach out to others that have viewed it .
don't read spoilers, but if a good number of people agree that it is simply slow paced and gets better make your decision then if ts worth it .
