Was thinking to myself, if I had to choose my favorite anime of all time what would it be? I narrowed it down and chose Samurai Champloo!

Then I thought to myself, hmmm.. I wonder what other people's choice would be if they had to choose their favorite anime of all time and why it was. So I created this forum topic!

What is your favorite anime of all time? why? and would you recommend it?

I have a long history of watching anime starting from the days of the old super robots to the tv soap style animes and to the latest of trends and I'd say Puella Magi Madoka Magica is my favorite trumping old classics and even the newer stuffs.

Why? IMO everything about it is almost perfect. The direction, writing, OST, voice acting, and timing was just perfect. The animation is great and the funny thing is IMO the sometimes wonky animation is PMMM's weakest aspect but even then PMMM's animation is great most of the time.

Hmmmmm, very tough question of course.

i'll probably go with Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. For 85, the animation was superior to a majority of 90's anime. I mean you can totally SEE THE MONEY SPENT while making it.

Add to it the amazing story, character drama, and action sequences...it was a great show. Back in the days when gritty wasn't a deconstruction, just a story.

Now and Then, Here and There is a recent anime that I also hold in very high regards.

UNFORTUNATELY, all my favorite anime are just as good in book form as well, so don't read too much into my picks, I'm a story guy.

It's a deconstruction of the Magical Girl genre. It takes all previous knowledge of the genre, breaks it down, analyzes each section, then puts it all together. Throw in some amazing OST and visuals, and you have an amazing series.

If you're going to try it, get past episode 4. o3o

Cowboy Bebop scores high on nearly everything that a series can be ranked on. The stories are good. The animation is great. The sound is amazing (even the Dub is good). The characters are interesting with enough backstory to get your attention, but not so much that there is no mystery involved. The reason I like Bebop so much though, isn't really any of those things. I rate it so high because it was so enjoyable. It's funny, riveting, sad, and insightful and when I finished watching it I had the feeling that I had been with them on their grand adventure. I gave me anything I could have wanted from a series, except perhaps a happy ending.

I rank Toradora! up with Cowboy Bebop, even though the shows are not remotely similar. Toradora! manages to tell a love story without being too sweet. It has drama, but not melodrama and it has plenty of laughs without getting stupid. The character development of Taiga and Ami are among the best I have seen in any show. What it comes down to with Toradora! is that I was entertained, but also moved by the shows tender moments in a way that no other show yet has matched.

Texhnolyze because it has a certain atmosphere to it that you don't see in anime, or really, anywhere else. It's quiet, it's dark, it's gritty, it's not for the impatient. Both the English and Japanese casts are great. You actually have to pay attention to know what's going on. A very... experimental... anime. Here's the trailer:
