If I enjoy the chracters, plot and animation it gets a 9 or a 10. Because at the end of the day that is the most important factor. To enjoy it. However I am ever so slightly obbsessed with Free!

After i post the completion of my anime, i usually give it a rating and a little comment that has no weight on the scores, but an idea of what to expect. My ratings are usually generous, but i try to be harsh though most anime can at least entertain me. The scores are usually skewed to 7 and 8.

10- "I have nothing left to teach you". The epitome of beauty, epicness, entertainment. Not much anime get a 10 from me, example, this year when i started rating the shows i watch, only 3 anime received a 10 (Shiki, Code Geass, Red Garden) others are (Soul Eater, Rosario+Vampire, Strawberry Panic!, Kuroshitsuji, Hunter x Hunter, One Piece, Higurashi)

9- "Excellent series, very little complaints". (Shingeki no Kyojin, Death Note, Sekirei, Welcome to the NHK, School Days, Occult Academy)

8- "Great series, mostly benefited from either having awesome characters, or a great storyline". Most of your "masterpieces" fall here. (Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Steins; Gate, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Nichijou, Hataraku Maou- sama!)

7- "Good series, either it was too dry at times, too pointless, or left things out". Very entertaining anime may fall here often that couldn't reach that next level. (Haganai, Kamisama Dolls, Chobits, Mushibugyo, Gurren Lagann)

6- "Meh...decent series that made me entertained me at times, but not good enough". Fair amount of things that could have gone better for it and is pretty lacking. (OniAi, Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi, Vividred Operation, xxxHolic, High School of the Dead)

5- " Ugh, i understand the plot is pretty good, but it isn't delivered well". The anime that at time really buildup, but did nothing with it. Characters aren't anything special. (Another, Anohana, C^3, Bakemonogatari, Okamikakushi, Mashiroiro Symphony)

4- "Wow, this is actually really boring". Ok, this is where the anime becomes insufferable to me. Either it disappointed me immensely, or it has few decent moments. (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, High School DxD, Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou, Dragon Crisis, Sword Art Online)

3- "Just another bad anime i decided to finish". Either it lacks a decent plot, decent characters, or only has a glimmer of entertainment.
(Coppelion, Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku wo, A Dark Rabbit Has Seven Lives)

2- "WTF, that was horrible! Unable to even finish this anime". Garbage. Has no reputable form of decency in the slightest. It's close to impossible for me to sit still and pay attention to the anime. (None...yet)

1- "Now now now now now, After you back it up, then stop, Then wha-wha-what, drop drop it like it's hot". I write a letter to the material source, production company, seiyuus, the whole group responsible for this travesty. (NONE!)

On the favorites thread I dont use numbers at all. Some people do and that's great too. Made it no rules do it as you feel comfortable and it gets good responses both numbers and words.I think a person gets to express their views better and makes for good reading.I go by top or most favorite, really good. Good with faults.Watching for the laughs.Watching but let down! And comments get posted!

I'd say there's a profound difference on a classic 1-10 scale between worst and average. Skewing towards 7 is interesting. Are you saying there's an inherent tendency towards 7 on all 1-10 scales or that anime in general leans towards 7 on average? If it's the former, I guess I'd need to see some statistical evidence. If it's the latter, that would probably need a very large polling group to prove out. But first you'd have to come to an agreement on the scale itself. This thread kind of demonstrates on a small scale that we're all not on the same page in that department

WIth mal, the from the rank of around 480ish to 3000 contains animes rated between 7.99-7.0, this is out of 8500 anime titles. This is roughly 30% of all rates is a 7.

This is rough, rough numbers. I do tend to think people rate around a 7 in this 10 point scale.

Isn't that mostly because people just don't watch many things they'd rate below a 7 though, on average? Although it's fair to say that what we usually give 7s should actually be a 5 or 6 by that logic. It's inflated, like videogame scores.

I just assume there's an exponential progression:

01-02--03---04----05-----06------07-------08--------09---------10

As compared to a more linear one:

01-----02-----03-----04-----05-----06-----07-----08-----09-----10

To correct the preponderance of higher scores. Although it'd be a lot sharper than that, but still. Just the idea that the difference between an 8 and a 9 is much greater than between a 2 and a 3. That's my rationale anyway.

In a sense, I agree with the exponential progression. Of course there are fine elements that separate an individual given a 8, 9 or 10. What I am interested in is, how said individual separate the low tier anime, ie the 1 from 2 from 3. I will stand on this though, when an individuals gives a low rating he or she slaps on a low number, insert a reason and move on. Whereas the upper echelon most tend to nit-pick the small details to give an anime the maximum number of decimal points.

While I'll keep the possibility of using the whole 1-10 scale, I really only use 5-10, because, imo, an anime has to be shit in every possible category to get below a 5.

I tend to put a lot of weight on story and characters, so if I don't like either, a show will be deducted points. How much depends on how many things are wrong.

It is why I gave Coppelion a 5 and Beyond the Boundary a 6. They both have horrible stories and characters, imo, but they are both saved by their great production values. I at least still got something out of both shows.

My rankings:

10 - Great show, one if I don't own I will someday to rewatch it, if it was subbed and later gets dubbed I'll watch the dub all the way through regardless of what I think of the voices.
9 - Less likely to buy but if I came across it again I'd still be as likely to rewatch.
8 - I usually give this to shows that I'd watch another season of if made but usually the ending made me not rate it higher.
7 - Average, I liked it enough to watch it all the way through but it didn't stand out as anything too special.
6 - Interesting enough to keep me from dropping it but I won't be watching it again.
5 - Dropped, just wasn't my thing, but still an interesting looking show.
4 - Dropped, wasn't my thing and quickly showed it wouldn't become my thing.
3 - Really bad show, but had some elements in it that kept me watching (Infinite Stratos 2 for example, Ichigo 100% as well but my enjoyment of the manga is actually what caused that rating)
2 - Horrible show, very few redeeming qualities, likely skipped episodes. As I only have one show rated as such, I'd guess it would have to be reserved for sequels of good shows that tried to destroy my memory of that show.
1 - Same as 2 without the redeeming qualities.

I saved 4 and 5 for dropped shows since I try to keep balance between my personal and "professional" opinion of shows, I don't think it's fair to rate a show too low if I don't take in its entire body of work. I think my ratings do skew me towards handing out a lot of 7s and 8s and in general I tend to stay in the 6-10 range.

I think most people stay in the 6-10 range leading to lots of 7-8s since most people wouldn't start an anime that doesn't look like something they'd enjoy, so you get used to those shows ending up on that side of the scale.

I don't take scored too seriously these days. Might be because not a lot of animes these days are good :P
If I really liked an anime I'll give it an 8 or more. Doesn't matter if it's generic or whatever, if I really loved it I will score it high.
Like Love Lab. Probably didn't deserve a 9, but I had a lot of fun watching it, laughed a lot etc. So I gave it a 9.
Understood? xD

I use MALs scoring.

For me, there's a lot of factors that go into me giving out a grade like Was the story enjoyable?; Did the Opening/Ending song(s) fit the series?; Was it able to make me cry?. I just don't give out A+ like that. The series has to move me enough to make that decision.

I tend not to give numerical ratings because I don't find them informative enough. I could rate seven different anime 8/10, but that doesn't mean I like all of them equally; I may like some of them better than others. I don't rate out of 100 because I can't decide what makes one anime deserve 83//100 and another anime deserve 84/100. Sometimes I do think of certain series on a 10-point scale, and when I do I pretty much never give below 5/10; if I find an anime so unappealing that I could actually give it less than 5/10, I'll probably just drop it and forget about it rather than give it an official rating.

I don't give ratings based on recommendations or what I feel others will like/dislike because everyone has different tastes and it's impossible for someone to know for a fact that they will/won't like an anime until they check it out for themselves. There are anime that consistently get high ratings, but are disliked by plenty of people, and there are anime that consistently get low ratings, but which still have their fans (Coppelion, for example).

1-2 This anime is such a pile of (swear word inserted here) how could anyone think of bloody watching this dog turd. How the hell was this anime ever made it so crap and so (swear word inserted here) stupid. This anime is absolutely horrible and no one in this world should be bloody watching this. I will never watch or hear of this anime ever again!

3-4 This anime is quite bad. It had some good moments and some potential. However, ultimately it failed miserably and not only did it disappoint me it made me feel very depress on how and why I watched it. It is a bad anime and lacked anything to make me want to watch it again.

5- This anime is pretty average. I enjoyed it fairly to a certain extent but there are certain aspects and moments where it made me really want to stop watching. It had some good things about the anime but quite a fair amount of negative things that made the anime just average. I won't watch this anime again.

6- This anime is ok. I enjoyed watching this anime but there were certain aspects and moments that made me enjoy it less. It had a fair amount of positive things that made me enjoy it but some negative things as well. The anime is not anything special but I still keep the anime in mind.

7- This anime is pretty good. I enjoyed watching this anime as it has some pretty good moments. It can feel rather slow or have some rather boring moments. However, most of the time it is fairly enjoyable and I never felt the need to stop watching it but it didn't make me feel wow! Overall, I liked it but still probably won't watch it again.

8- This anime was very good. I really enjoyed watching this anime as it had some pretty awesome moments. It still has some problems and can sometimes be pretty boring or slow. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this anime and it some great moments that makes me go wow! Overall, I really liked it and might consider watching it again.

9- This anime was amazing! I not only enjoyed watching this anime I love watching this anime. It has some amazing moments and everything about it is great such as characters, music, story ect !. The anime was one of the best but some flaws made it not perfect. Still I am so glad to have watched this anime I probably will watch it again in the future.

10- This anime is a flipping masterpiece! How could you not watch this anime it is one of the best in the world! Thank you for making this anime and for allowing me to watch it! This anime is perfect and everyone in the world should have watched this anime it should be mentioned everywhere! I will definitely watch this anime again!

That is technically how I rate anime. It is slightly over exaggerated but oh well. Most of the time I rate anime like 8.5,6.2,9.3 and stuff like that.

I don't really ranking things out of ten. I personally prefer a tier system.

I suppose, if someone wanted to, they could apply a 1-5 or a 1-10 ranking to my system of tiers, but I also rank shows within the tiers to differentiate further.

As for how people rank things...I either see people being overly critical or just ranking things on how much they like them. I think that's why we see a lot of mediocre anime getting 8/10 ratings. But, honestly, I'd rather see a bunch of 8/10 ratings than a bunch of 2/10. At least an 8/10 gives a positive enough impression that someone might give an anime a chance and decide for themselves. I usually try to review and rank on the merits of the anime, rather than its flaws, unless the flaws really detract from the overall experience of the show.

EDIT: I'm actually considering revamping the way I do rankings, as the ranking within tiers is becoming harder and harder as more shows pour into my watched list. It's also difficult because I watch such a wide variety of shows (how do you compare Attack on Titan and Non Non Biyori???). I might go to a genre tier system, although that could become equally unwieldy considering the fluid nature of genre.

Probably. But Sturgeon's Law applies to pretty much everything, not just anime.
