I suppose, if someone wanted to, they could apply a 1-5 or a 1-10 ranking to my system of tiers, but I also rank shows within the tiers to differentiate further.

As for how people rank things...I either see people being overly critical or just ranking things on how much they like them. I think that's why we see a lot of mediocre anime getting 8/10 ratings. But, honestly, I'd rather see a bunch of 8/10 ratings than a bunch of 2/10. At least an 8/10 gives a positive enough impression that someone might give an anime a chance and decide for themselves. I usually try to review and rank on the merits of the anime, rather than its flaws, unless the flaws really detract from the overall experience of the show.

I like your system. You use it on the favorites thread and makes sense! If you have a bunch of 7's how do you tell the difference! Tiers or groups works quite nice! BTW keep posting your favorites I like reading them.

I tend to rate my anime against each other. Generally, I pick a couple of anime that I think are 10/9/8/7/6/5 and then compare the anime I've watched to them to see where they fall. If a show starts seeming like it'd be less than 6 I tend to just drop it outright.

1-2. Story is horrible. Cannot get into it at all. Voices are monologue at best. No cool moments whatsoever. Characters are lame.
3-4. Story is bad. 1 or 2 scenes are ok, but still doesn't draw me in. Voices have that monologue feeling. Cannot get into the characters.
5-6. Story is ok. Can somewhat get into it, but it takes some effort. Voices are ok, but some needed work. Can somewhat get into the characters.
7-8. Story is good. Kinda fun, but only to watch and not be miserable at all. Voices are pretty good. The characters are well done, but can't really relate.
9-10. Story is really good/great. Enticed and really mixes with emotions desired. Voices are very close to perfect and really convincing. Can relate to the characters and are well done. Makes me want to come back for more.

anywhere from a 1-6 would just mean that i didn't really enjoy the anime or something happened that pissed me off somehow. i usually give any anime that i found "fun" a 8-9. 7 means i like it but i wasn't as fond to it as i like, enjoyable but not fun. 10 goes to masterpieces that i think all anime should make an example of and is still fun to watch.

honestly speaking that how i personally rate anime, sometimes i mix this when i give ratings to others.

i have two rating system, the one posted at the top is a personal one, and another that rates every detail. character development, story, contrast, understandable experiences, etc.

shows like madoka earns a strong 8 but in my book its a 6 maybe 7 at best.

i feel like the rating system should have something like this, a personal preference rating which i guess is the universal and the rating on expectation of a standard.

much like how you would look at yelp for food compares to the michelin guide to fine dining. foodie vs critic.

Does anyone rates anime shows from ten to one?
Ten is the lowest and one highest.

I've never had a good system. Something like:
1-2: I've never given a 1 or 2. Most shows are worthy of 3 for at least trying.
3-5: "Not feelin' it."
6: "Fine"
7. "Good"
8. "Very good. Feel-good series usually get 8s in my experience."
9. "Epic, but not a favorite."
10. "Something about it really stands out and makes it a favorite."

Maybe at some point we should consider pulling together a rating system of our very own for this forum? The five star system hasn't been mentioned a whole lot which leads me to believe it's not all that popular, and if we came up with something comprehensive enough, the mod team might consider making it a sticky?

Just a thought.

I tend to rate my animes between 6 to 10.

1 - 4: Dropped before completion
5: Had to force myself to finish it
6: Not enjoyable
7: Average
8: Pretty good
9: Epic, eg Psycho Pass
10: Masterpiece, a once or twice per year show that really stands out, eg Madoka, Steins Gate. It also has to be a unique and non generic story. Well executed but re-used themes will only net a 9 on my scale.

I have only given 4 ratings of 10 so far.

i don't really have a system... i just watch an episode or two and if it has stuff i wouldn't watch (i.e. ecchi, cheesy romance, etc), i already know i won't like it... if iever rate anything it's somethign i really, really, REALLY like (or dislike) and i give it a 9-10 or 1-2.

I rate anime on a 5 star/point scale.

5 - FREAKING AMAZING! The anime made me cry or think about life.
(Cannan, Attack on Titan, Elfen Lied, Last Exile, Toradora)

4 - Really liked it but there a few things that kept it from being the best.
(Sword Art Online, Arpeggio of Blue Steel, Gunslinger Girl, Black Lagoon, Chobits)

3 - Liked it. It was fun to watch but nothing special. Mediocre.
(Desert Punk, Sacred Blacksmith, Another, Hell Girl)

2 - Didn't like it. -Had a hard time finishing a series. Story, characters felt boring, confusing or frustrating to follow or care about.
(Mirai Nikki, Madoka Magica, Angel Beats, and Shirigui: Death Frenzy)

1 - Terrible! Self Explanatory. I never had judged an anime and have given any, a rating this low.

IMO, idk about you guys but the anime that I first started watching, the series I saw when I was newbie are rated higher or had a higher impact than the series I watch today. I think it's because I judge harder than before and try to compare all other series to my all time faves.

Since I list series I've viewed in the past few years (and some but not all before then) on MAL, I use their 1-10 rating system.

The problem I have with there system is that it devotes 1-4 to different degrees of bad, which in my opinion is a waste. If an anime is worse than simply "bad" (a score of 4), most people aren't going to bother completing it. I'm more interested in the gradient of how good an anime is, and wish they at least allowed half-point scores. To me, "good" also has a lot to do with how entertained I was. I've seen anime that hit all the right checkboxes from an objective viewpoint, but which I still enjoyed less than another series that was lacking in one or more of those aspects. All this together conspires to result in the bulk of the anime I have listed being scored at 6-8.

I also have yet to rate any anime a "10/10", as the tag for that is "masterpiece", which to me implies literally nothing could be done to make it better. Given that anime series are produced under the constraints of time and budget, it is quite unlikely that will ever be the case.

Personally, I would prefer a system more akin to Netflix, where the rating represent how much you liked or disliked the show, but with more scale (since even Netflix goes from a 3 star "liked it" to a 2 star "didn't like it", whereas sometimes I wish there were something akin to "meh", inbetween).

WIth mal, the from the rank of around 480ish to 3000 contains animes rated between 7.99-7.0, this is out of 8500 anime titles. This is roughly 30% of all rates is a 7.

This is rough, rough numbers. I do tend to think people rate around a 7 in this 10 point scale.

Even with rough, rough numbers, 30% is a pretty big slice of the pie! With numbers like that, it kind of gives weight to the necessity of professional critics. But that's an entirely separate subject.
