I always found Evangelion to be pretentious as hell.

Evangelion itself isn't pretentious, it's the diehard fans who think it's more than it actually is. Pretty sure I read somewhere that Anno said all the symbolism and what not in that series was basically put in because he thought it looked/sounded cool, nothing deeper than that. Probably fair to say that it's over-rated, although I still liked it myself. I definitely don't see it as this genius deconstruction of the genre that a lot of it's fans would have you believe.

I know a lot people my age have fond memories of Gundam Wing because it was one of the first mecha shows they got into, but I never got real into it, and it hasn't aged well at all imo (tried to rewatch it again recently and couldn't get more than a couple of episodes into it. it's hideous). It was kind of neat as a kid and worked well enough as a sort of introduction to the genre, I'll admit, but I can't stand it now.

Big O and Evangelion were probably the two shows that sold me on the genre the most as a kid. Obviously a bit too young for the mecha stuff that was big in the 80s, and unfortunately I'm a little too superficial to be able to get over the old animation.

I remember Relena Peacecraft irritated me back when I watched Wing when it aired on CN in the late 90's, so I wasn't very tempted to re-watch it during the time CR had it. I can only imagine that my impression of her would not have improved with age.

At least once, I've seen someone compare Lacus Clyne to her, which prompted me to think, "Really? Were we watching the same series?".
