That happened 200 miles from me and I work for that railroad. If the grain train wouldn't have derailed first that would have never happened.

i see so that railroad must be under a lot of heat i suppose and was it an accident or human error ?

I don't know yet what was the cause but I can speculate that since it has been in the negatives(temps) that the rail broke and and derailed the grain train and the oil train came on the track running parallel to that track and hit the derailed grain train and then boom.

By the way, if you see someone named "Bruhathkayosaurus" and wonder why they're a Night Owl, it's because that's Faye's new account, though she's not sure if she'll be able to join us

you would be surprised at all the things that can cause rail to brake sub-zero temperatures add in a heavy trains the rail can just crack and if not detected soon enough can chip into a wide gap

kind'a easier said then done, in the winter we have inspectors that go out and check the track for defects when one is found they close the line and fix the problem. also that may not have been the original cause as there are many reasons for derailments. as well as rail isn't perfect so there will always be problems.

there are a lot of derailments that happen in a year probably 98% are minor like one rail car coming of the tracks, and then there is that 2% that are big and end up reported on the news. Its almost comparable to car accidents. this is the 3rd in just over a month the first one was people driving truck on to the tracks and leaving it for the train to hit. the second was some one driving into the side of a train as it was going by a crossing.
